DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 “Raiders of the Lost Art” Recap

I am a huge Star Wars fan that I love all the references to it in “Raiders of the Lost Art” and I will point them out as we go through the recap.
We open up the episode in New York City, six months ago, We find out what happened to Rip in the season premiere. As the Waverider starts sinking in the Hudson and the ship needing 15 years to repair, Rip starts the repair protocol, reboots Gideon, takes the Spear of Destiny out of his hiding spot then touches the time drive and disappears.
Back to the present day, Nate is trying to figure out what the Legion of Doom wants with the two amulets. Amaya figures out the amulets actually form one medallion.
Nate updates the team at what the medallion can do, which is lead its holder to the location of the Spear of Destiny, which has the power to permanently change one’s reality, which no Time Master can fix since it isn’t a time aberration.
The Legends are alerted to a time aberration when a pair of bikers are murdered. Why is it a time aberration? One of the bikers that gets killed invented some sort of important motorcycle part. That isn’t the time aberration but how they died, which is from a League of Assassin move.
So the team head to 1965 Los Angeles and arrive at the campus of USC and head towards a film set (a sign read “Legends this way””). We see a scene from Rip’s film being shot and it is season 1 of the show as we see “Rip” facing off against “Vandal Savage”. Rip who thinks he is Phil yells cut as he is not happy with the scene and leaves the set with his prop master George following close behind.
Merlyn and Darhk confront Rip with their laser guns and tries to take him. The Legends arrive and are surprised to see Rip. The Legends try and rescue Rip from the Legion of Doom and in the ensuing battle, George gets hit in the arm by one of the laser guns. Jax tries to take Rip away but he fights him off with his film script. The police arrive and Rip is arrested. Everyone else gets away.
The team realizes that Rip has the Spear of Destiny and spring him out of jail before the Legion of Doom can. When Laurel, Martin and Mick go and visit him under the guise of being his mental health team, Rip starts to panic that forces Mick to knock him out.
The trio bring Rip up to the hospital roof where they are grabbed by the Waverider with the Legion of Doom on their heels.
After escaping, Gideon is examining Rip in the medical bay and discover that he isn’t suffering from time drift but someone how his brain was changed because he touched the time drive.
As the team are trying to figure out where the Spear of Destiny could be we see that Ray and Nate are unable to access their physics and history knowledge. Amaya sees a clapboard with a G. Lucas on it and we learn that George Lucas didn’t become a film maker but a salesman instead. Because of this, Ray enver sees Star Wars and gets inspired to become an inventor and get 4 PhDs. Nate never sees Raiders of the Lost Ark and doesn’t become an impossibly handsome historian. Gideon tells them that George Lucas has already quit film school and we see him dump a box of props down the garbage shoot.
So Ray, Nate and Amaya go back to try and convince George to go back to film school and make movies. Ray and Nate do a horrible job at trying to convince George so Amaya does mentioning how Ray and Nate were inspired by his films and tells him that he is their only hope. Star Wars Reference #1: “Help me Obi-Way, you are my only hope”. Also, Amaya herself is a Star Wars reference hersefl as actress Maisie Richardson-Sellers was in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens as Korr Sella, an aide to General Leia (Carrie Fisher). Korr Sella was on the planet that Starkiller base blew up but you can see her in this deleted scene.
As, Amaya, Ray and Nate bring George back to his USC dorm room, the Legion of Doom is there looking for the Spear of Destiny, who says that the film crew saw him with it. George tells him that he threw out the box of props from the movie. The reason why this group of Legends don’t use their powers is because Merlyn took Amaya’s necklace and Ray doesn’t have his Atom suit and Nate don’t have his powers.
So the Legion takes George, Ray, Nate and Amaya to the city dump and thrown down the trash compactor to find the Spear of Destiny. As added incentive, Merlyn starts the trash compactor and the walls start moving inwards. Amaya, Ray and Nate try and uses a pole to halt the trash compactor. This scene plays out like the trash compactor scene in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. George finds the Spear of Destiny but Amaya tells George to hide it from the Legion of Doom. Ray, Nate and Amaya beg George Lucas to stay in film school and make films that will change the world. When George yells that he wants to be a director, Ray gets his Atom suit back and Nate gets his powers back too and get out of the trash compactor.
Back on the Waverider, Rip wonders into his office and finds Sara there. Sara needs Rip to remember where the Spear of Destiny is but he doesn’t Thankfully, Jax kept Rip’s film script and we see that it is based on them and it includes a reference to the Spear of Destiny. They head towards the city dump and get in a battle with the Legion of Doom. Sara manages to get the medallion off of Darhk. But the Legion gets some help when Thawne shows up.
When it looks like the team is about to be defeated, Rip comes and it is really him dressed in his trench coat and speaking in his British accent wielding his gun. However when the gun misfires, Rip isn’t back but just good ole Phil, who was pretending to help the team and be the Rip they know. The team does escape thanks to Gideon opening fire on the Legion of Doom. Unfortunately, Thawne speeds Rip away.
Sara is mad at herself for losing Rip again but Jax says that the team did score a win by getting back the medallion and spear. Jax also says they will get Rip back because Sara is determined to make it happen. Meanwhile, time has fixed itself and George Lucas does make his films and Ray and Nate are back. Ray, Nate and Amaya sit in for a movie night. Nate wants to watch Raiders, Ray wants to watch Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Amaya is interested in Howard the Duck, which the two men veto.
Elsewhere in the episode, Mick confides in Martin that he is having visions of Snart telling him that he has become soft since joining the team. Mick wants Martin’s help in getting rid of those visions. Martin examines Mick’s brain and finds a device in their that was planted in their from the Time Masters during his time as Kronos. Martin thinks the device could be a reason why Mick is seeing Snart. Martin performs brain surgery on Mick to remove the device. However, the device has been inactive. Martin gives a reason as to why Mick is seeing visions of Snart.
Meanwhile, we see why Thawne wants Rip and that is to locate the other pieces of the Spear of Destiny. Rip tells Thawne that he isn’t who he thinks he is but just Phil a full-time film student, part-time recreational drug user. Rip sees that Thawne intends to torture him for information but he corrects him and says it will be Merlyn and Darhk who will be doing the torturing.
This was a fun episode, mostly because of the Star Wars reference but I also loved Arthur Darville have some fun being “Phil”.
Hopefully, the Legends will get Rip back next week.
