Saving Hope’s Fifth Season To Be Its Last

Production on Saving Hope’s fifth season is wrapping up and with that news comes the announcement that the fifth season will also be the show’s last. Series star, Erica Durance, made that announcement on the show’s official Twitter account:

“The production of 85, hour-long episodes is a huge undertaking and accomplishment – a testament to wonderful collaborations of writers, performers, production, and our generous support from CTV,” said Executive Producer Ilana Frank, in a statement. “We proved that hard work can be fun, and we thank our Canadian viewers for their enthusiastic loyalty. We can’t wait to share what we have in store for our final season.”

The fifth season will comprise of 18 episodes and will air as part of CTV’s 2016/17 midseason lineup so we can expect it to air sometime in January.

The press release goes on to detail what is in store for the final season:

Picking up in the aftermath of the heart-stopping Season 4 finale, in which a vengeful Tom Crenshaw (Travis Milne) appeared at the Hope Zion Hospital Fellowship Awards and fired a shot at Alex (Erica Durance) and Charlie (Michael Shanks), Season 5 of SAVING HOPE sees the Hope Zion staff thrust into turmoil. As Alex faces a big decision, her fellow doctors deal with new challenges as changes come to Hope Zion that will not only affect the livelihood of the hospital, but also its doctors and everything they hold dear.

Saving Hope stars Erica Durance as Dr. Alex Reid, Michael Shanks as Dr. Charlie Harris, Wendy Crewson as Dr. Dana Kinney; Benjamin Ayres as Dr. Zach Miller; Canadian Screen Award nominee Julia Taylor Ross  as Dr. Maggie Lin; Canadian Screen Award-winner Michelle Nolden as Dr. Dawn Bell; Huse Madhavji as Dr. Shahir Hamza; Kim Shaw (THE GOOD WIFE) as Dr. Cassie Williams, Dejan Loyola as Dr. Dev Sekara, and Jarod Joseph as Dr. Emanuel Palmer.

We here at Pop Goes the World is a bit bummed at this news but at the same time not surprised as Canadian shows tend to now have a huge lifespan and 85 episodes is quite a lot for a Canadian show. What really hurts is that we no longer get to see this talented cast on screen when the show ends. We are huge fans of Erica Durance and it was great seeing her on screen again after Smallville ended. We grew to become fans of Julia Taylor Ross, Michelle Nolden and Benjamin Ayers. Our love for Wendy Crewson just grew and we will miss the chemistry between Durance and Michael Shanks.

Since it is the last season, what do you hope to see? Do you want a resolution to Luke’s paternity? Do you want to see Daniel Gillies return for an episode or two as a spirit? Sound off in the comments for your wish list.

  1. So want to know who Luke’s father is. I’m a big TVD/ Originals fan so of course seeing Daniel Giles would be welcome. ( plus he’s both talented and hot ). Especially if Luke is his.

  2. I am begging someone to stop this nonsense, Saving Hope is an incredible series and my wish is that season 5 is not the last. That someone saves it. Save Hope!

  3. I am truly disappointed…..

  4. Please don’t let this be the end of saving hope I look forward to seeing this show all the time iv got to know who is Luke’s father and what happens with Alex and Charlie do they get married what happens???????

    • I think the ship has sailed as to who Luke’s father is. The show made a big deal of it in the first episode of season 4 but then after that nothing. Charlie has accepted Luke has his son, biological or not. As for if Charlie and Alex will get married, I would think so. This show is about hope and I see the show ending on a high note.

NO, this cannot be the last season!! I LOVE this series and there are so many avenues that could be explored!! If I am truly not mistaken, when Joel was killed off, his spirit appeared to Charlie in the same story and he asked Charlie to take care of them!! I assumed with that comment, it was the answer to the question of who Luke’s biological father!! It appears from all these comments that I guess I am wrong!! If that be the case, you folks should bring “Joel’s spirit” back and make it clear exactly who the baby’s father is!! Now, if the baby were to have some serious illness requiring the paternity be revealed, that could the way it is determined!! Just, saying…..

  9. What happens at the finale? Does the inmate kill the doctors.

I truly love saving hope. I’m praying that there will be more. It would be awesome if luke was really Charlie’s son. I would love to see Alex and Charlie get married. They are a perfect fit. It would also be great for Alex to see what Charlie experiences when seeing the spirits.

  11. Luv the show hope Charlie and Alex get married, I hate that season 5 is the last season. I watch it every Tuesday and Saturday night.
