The Flash Season 3 “Paradox” Recap

We were told that Barry going back in time and creating Flashpoint would have ramifications not only on The Flash but also Arrow (and maybe DC’s Legends of Tomorrow). And we do learn exactly what Barry’s actions has affected the lives of Barry’s friends in Star City.
We see Barry speed off to Star City to get Felicity’s advice on what to do after altering the timeline. Before she can give any advice, Felicity needs to know exactly what has happened. Barry tells her about Flashpoint and when he came back things seemed the same but weren’t at the same time. Barry tells Felicity that Iris and Joe don’t speak and that is because he neglected to tell his daughter that her mom was still alive.
After stopping a thief that stole jewels, we learn that Team Flash is fractured as Cisco is not the same old Cisco and can barely speak to Barry let alone look at him. We learn that Cisco’s brother, Dante, died at the hands of a drunk driver and the source of the tension is because Barry refused go back in time to save him.
Another difference is that for a year, Barry has a new work colleague, Julian Albert (Tom Felton), the new meta-human CSI, and the two don’t like each other one bit with Barry apparently telling Team Flash how much he can’t stand him. Of course, this Barry doesn”t remember constantly saying that. Also, Caitlin and Cisco think Julian is the best.
A big different to Barry is that when he told Iris he is ready to give their relationship a shot and states he took her advice on the porch, Iris has no clue what he is talking about. Barry bemoans to Felicity that he’s kissed Iris twice but both times he erased it from existence.
Barry notes things seem okay in Star City but after quickly searching on Felicity’s computer, he sees a photo of Diggle with a son named John but Barry wonders about baby Sara. Felicity notes that Diggle only has a son. OMG! Barry erased a child from the timeline and baby Sara was so cute too. Nice going Barry.
While there are subtle differences in the new post Flashpoint world, someone who is remembering his Flashpoint life is Edward Clariss. While riding a bus, Clariss starts to hear Alchemy again and he scratches his name on the window. Eventually, Clariss follows the voice to some sort of warehouse where there are a ton of robbed figures. A man rises with a mask and calls himself Alchemy and offers him the life in his vision and grants him power of speed that he saw.

The next day Barry is called in to investigate another human-sized skin husk that has been seen around the city. Julian refuses his help, which forces Barry to steal a sample and gives to STAR Labs but they nothing concrete. Cisco is still cold. Find out Dante killed drunk driver Barry doesnt know why mad Caitlin doesn’t want to get involved. Cisco and Catilin think Julian the best
Barry is at his breaking point at all the tension around so he tries to reconcile everyone by bringing them together for a family dinner at the West’s. Unfortunately, Barry brings Joe and Iris together under false pretenses while Caitlin and Cisco where there as buffers. However, Cisco correctly predicted the dinner would be a hot mess. The dinner is cut short with a meta human alert. When the Flash arrives, he is shocked to see the Rival. The Flash wonders how he is here. The Rival says he remembers his Flashpoint life which just had him and Kid Flash as the only speedsters. The Rival said his life was great until Barry showed up to ruin his life. The two fight along my bike route and the Flash thinks he pushed him over the railing and into the water but no body is found.

Back STAR Labs, Caitlin says the husk has traces of the speed force and Barry says it belongs to Edward Clariss. Iris speaks to Barry alone and shows a video that clearly shows that he knows Clariss and wants an explanation of why he is trying to fix her and her dad’s relationship. Barry only says that everything is his fault and will fix it. Barry starts to go back in time but Jay Garrick grabs him and takes him to a cafe we are in 1998. We know this because Dawson Creek is on TV (John Wesley Shipp played Dawson’s dad). Jay explains to Barry the paradox of time travel and trying to get Barry to understand that he can’t fix things that are broken by going back in time as there will always be cracks.
Barry goes back to STAR Labs and explains to Team Flash what he did and how he created a new timeline. Cisco is still mad at him for not going back in time to save Dante. Barry says if he did someone else would suffer a tragedy and tells him he needs to learn to move forward.
At the CCPD lab, Barry asks Julian to put aside difference so he can look at Clariss’ file. Julian reads him his findings but Barry wants to read it himself and discovers the husk found didn’t originate near the water but elsewhere. Barry goes to the warehouse and Rival wonders where Kid Flash is and says it is just him but Rival brought Alchemy who brings Barry down with a blast from a crystal.
At STAR Labs, Wally doesn’t think Team Flash should forgive Barry for keeping the Flashpoint secret. But Iris is the voice of reason and says they all have secrets and they are family and their grievances are petty. This leads to Iris and Joe reconciling. Caitlin then notes Barry is in distress. We see him fight Alchmy who says he is here to help people reach their full potential and prepare Earth for something. Wally notes that Team Flash needs to help Barry.
The Rival and Flash fight leads them to the abandoned saw mill in Flashpoint. Just as Rival is about to impale the Flash, Vibe arrives and offers an assist to capture Rival and it seems we got Team Flash back together.
At STAR Labs, Cisco dubs Alchemy, Doctor Alchemy and learn the reason why Rival didn’t have dark matter in him was because he didn’t get his powers from the particle accelerator explosion but Doctor Alchemy granting him those powers. Barry tells the team that Alchemy is preparing the world for something and figures that Doctor Alchemy is going to give back the powers that people had in Flashpoint meaning that Wally will be Kid Flash once again.
Team Flash also tells Barry that they don’t want to know about their Flashpoint lives. Barry then tells Cisco how he loved having someone out there with him and wonders if Cisco wants to do it again. Cisco turns him down but says that someday he might consider it. Barry then tells Caitlin that out of everyone, she is the least affected by Flashpoint unless she moonlights as an ophthalmologist. The two laugh at the joke but as Barry leaves, we see Caitlin’s hand starts to emit frozen smoke. It looks like Flashpoint has given birth to Killer Frost.
At Barry’s lab, Julian wonders how he knew Clariss’ name as he didn’t tell him. Julian tells Barry that he doesn’t trust him and that is why he doesn’t like him. Looks like the Flash and Draco Malfoy will have quite the rivalry.
At the West’s, Barry asks if Iris is sure she doesn’t want to know about the other timeline. Iris says she is sure and that Barry will always be Barry and she will always be Iris and they will always find their way to each other and the two finally share a kiss that won’t get erased.
In the coda, Clariss in in Iron Heights and Alchemy tells him how he has failed but Clariss wants another chance. Unfortunately for Clariss, Alchemy kills him.
With Caitlin’s Killer Frost powers emerging will she eventually become foe or stay friend. Will we see a team form on The Flash like we have on Arrow with Vibe, Kid Flash and the Flash keeping Central City safe? Hope that becomes the case.
