When I first heard that the CW was going to spin off characters from Arrow and The Flash for a team-up show, I was a bit hesitant. Seeing the trailer that convinced the CW to pick up the show, had me hopeful. Now comes the formal pilot for the show that is all about setting up the show.
Also, I think it is necessary to have watched Arrow and The Flash to understand the backstory of where these characters that are part of team.
London 2166
It is the Second Blitz and London and its famous landmarks are under attack by Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) and his crew. A young woman shields her son from Vandal’s men but she gets killed for her troubles. The son, Jonas, stands up to Savage and he ends up getting killed.
At the Time Masters Council, Rip Hunter (Arthur Darville) is begging the Time Masters to grant him a ship so he can stop Savage. The Time Masters deny his request feeling that if you stop Savage an even worse enemy would take his place and also they are no army. Rip mentions that he doesn’t need an army.
Next thing we see is Rip is in the Wave Rider asking Gideon to plot a course to Star City 2016 and pull up files on 8 individuals. This Gideon is not the same Gideon that the Reverse-Flash uses.
Star City 2016
The Atom is on a mission for the Green Arrow (Stephen Amell) infiltrating one of HIVE’s computers when Ghosts arrive. Ray goes back to full size and takes them down but then gets knocked out by Rip.
Tibet 2016
Sara is drinking at a bar there when she gets involved in a fight. Rip is there and knocks her out to with his stun gun
St. Roch 2016
Hawkman (Falk Hentschel) and Hawkgirl (Ciera Renee) aka Carter Hall and Kendra Saunders have just made a rescue and are arguing with each other. Rip suggests couple’s therapy then knocks them out too.
Pittsburgh 2016
Firestorm is taking down a bad guy with Stein (Victor Garbter) backseat superheroing in Jax’s (Franz Drameh) is hear. After taking the bad guy down, the two de-couple and start to argue. Rip swoops in to knock them out.
Central City 2016
Captain Cold aka Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller) and Heat Wave aka Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell) are getting away from their latest robbery when Rip steps in front of their vehicle to kidnap them
Rooftop – Star City 2016
When everyone wakes up, Rip explains the mission to stop Vandal Savage, whom Kendra and Carter are very familiar with. Snart and Rory believe Rip have the wrong people as they aren’t heroes. When Rip mentions that the 8 of them are legends in his time this gets them to seriously think about joining him. Rip gives them 36 hours to make up their minds and address where to meet.
Ray
Ray consults Oliver about what he should do but assures if he does go that he would be returned the moment he left so no one would miss him. Oliver is a bit hesitant after their last encounter with Savage but Ray wants to go and make a difference, which is something he has always wanted to do.
Kendra and Carter
It seems the two are living together and sharing the same bed, which is odd considering Kendra doesn’t quit remember the love that she has for Carter while he does for her. It should be noted that Kendra and Carter are the reincarnation of Egyptian priestess Shayera and Prince Khufu. The two have been killed over and over again by Savage over the last 4000 years. Each time the reincarnate, they are destined to find each other.
Kendra isn’t so keen to join Rip as she doesn’t feel like getting killed again by Savage. Carter on the other hand wants to. The two decide to fight it out and whoever wins gets to decide.
Sara
Sara and Laurel are sparring. Laurel encourages her sister to join Rip’s team. Sara is afraid about her need to kill people. Laurel mentions being the Black Canary helped her in her grief and it gave her strenght. Laurel then suggests that Sara become the White Canary and gifts her with a suit that Cisco made and says Sara doesn’t require a mask.
Snart and Rory
Rory doesn’t want to participate until he hears Snart’s idea about going back in time and stealing things like the Mona Lisa and the Hope Diamond during times when there would be no technology to catch them
Stein and Jax
Stein really wants to go on this adventure while Jax doesn’t want as he so young. Stein seems to let him go but drugs his drink and drives his unconscious form to the meeting spot.
All 8 have gathered and Rip reveals the Wave Rider. Everyone is on board and strapped in like they are going to ride a roller coaster. Jax wakes up just as they are about to head to 1975 to meet an Aldus Boardman, a professor that knows a lot about Savage, and I believe was the professor in the video that Team Arrow found in the cross-over.
As the Wave Rider disappears, two dudes see this and gets all trippy. However, a guy in a metal suit Chronos is there and determines the two are insignificant in the timeline and kills them.
1975
Rip tells Sara, Snart and Rory to stay behind as their skills aren’t necessary to see Boardman. Rip tells Ray, Stein, Kendra and Carter that Boardman is going to die in 48 hours so they need to speak to him soon.
They are in St. Roch, New Orleans and head to the university there. They find Boardman at his desk slumped over. The group thinks Boardman is dead but he just asleep. When Boardman wakes, he immediately recognizes Carter and Kendra.
Boardman explains to the group how Savage is tied to Kendra and Carter and the god Horus. We then learn that Boardman is the son of Carter and Kendra in one of their past lives. Kendra apologizes for not remembering her son but he says it is fine. Boardman then shows the group Savage has part of important historical moments like JFK’s assassination but in the background.
Meanwhile, back on the Wave Rider, Sara decides to head out for a drink with Snart and Rory but Jax has to remain behind.

At the bar, the three are having a good time drinking beers and listening to Captain and Tenille’s “Love will Keep us Together”. Sara is dancing to the tune when a big burly guy approaches her to hit on her. Sara tells him he is not her type but his girlfriend is. When the guy goes to hit Sara, she breaks his wrist and more people start to come after Sara who at first is taking them on but as more people join the fray, Snart and Rory help out.
While Jax is on the Wave Rider, he is trying to get Gideon to take him back to 2016 but to no avail. The Wave Rider then comes under attack from Chronos. Rip is alerted to trouble and quickly asks Boardman where they can find Savage. Boardman gives them a book to help find Savage. As the group leaves, Kendra doesn’t want to leave her son to die when they can stop it. Rip says they can’t mess with time. Kendra and Carter insist and we see Boardman with the group as the approach a Wave Rider under attack.
Stein and Ray make it to the Wave Rider so Ray can get his Atom suit and Stein can merge with Jax to become Firestorm. We get Firestorm, the Atom, Rip, Hawkman and Hawkgirl fighting Chrono soon Snart, Rory and Sara join in. Snart calls Chronos Boba Fett. Eventually, the Legends take out Chronos enough that lets them escape. However, Boardman gets gravely injured during the fight.
The Wave Rider is in a temporal hold while the ship gets fixed. We and the group learn that Chronos was chasing Rip down because he stole the Wave Rider and this mission wasn’t sanctioned by the Time Masters, a group that he left. Everyone learns that Rip lied about them that they aren’t legends but in fact are nothing, which is why he felt he could use them for his mission. Rip reveals the reason why he wants to go after Savage was he killed his wife and child (the two at the beginning of the episode). The issue is that Time Masters aren’t allowed to fall in love but he did and Savage took that away from him.
The group feel betrayed and it looks like their participation to take down Savage is in jeopardy.
Stein and Jax have a talk. Stein wanted an adventure thinking he won’t get that many as he ages and apologizes for dragging Jax. Jax decides he doesn’t want to go back yet and thinks Stein has plenty of adventure left in him.
Kendra visits Boardman, who gives her his mother’s engagement ring. Kendra takes and tells her son from a past life that she remembers it. I am not sure if she truly did but it was a comfort to her son.
Carter sees this moment and Kendra blames herself as Boardman could have died quietly in his office. Carter comforts her and calls her Shayera but the corrects himself. Kendra says she doesn’t mind being called Shayera.
Ray is doubting continuing on but when Sara tells him, Snart and Rory that they may be nothing from the future that Rip comes from but they can change their fate to become heroes and legends.
The group rejoins Rip in the bridge and decide to continue on to stop Savage and travel to where he is, which is Norway 1975.
And there it looks like Savage has gotten a hold of a nuclear weapon.
This was a very heavy set-up episode but at the same time looked like a lot of fun. It was nice seeing a lighter Sara and always welcome Brandon Routh on my screen. Glad that Victor Garber got first billin in this and am looking forward to more adventures of this rag tag crew.
