Kara and Alex go back home to Midvale as a respite from their recent troubles (Alex over her broken engagement and Kara over losing Mon-El). Eliza welcomes both of her girls home and while she is worried about Alex, she is also concerned with Kara. Eliza worries that Kara isn’t opening up properly about losing Mon-el but Kara insists she is fine and has made the right decision to concentrate on being a hero versus being human.

But the focus of this episode was seeing how the Danvers sisters truly became sisters. We must give a shout out to the casting people on the young actresses who portrayed young Alex (Olivia Nikkanen) and young Kara (Izabela Vidovic) because they were spot-on, especially on Nikkanen who looks so remarkably like Chyler Leigh.

We get this focus because Kara and Alex get into an argument about how to their dealing with their recent heartaches.

We go back 10 years ago and see that Kara and Alex weren’t always close. We see a rivalry with Kara using her super speed to get to the bathroom first and mocking Alex for her struggles at calculus. Creating a further rift is Eliza’s insistence that Alex babysit Kara not only at home but at school to ensure she doesn’t get in trouble.

At school, Kara struggles in Mr. Bernard’s history class while Alex shines. During lunch, Kara overhears two classmates talk about Superman capturing Lex Luthor and she tries to join in the conversation but they shut her down. Alex sits with her friends at one table and doesn’t allow Kara to join them. However, Kara does have a friend, Kenny Li (Ivan Mok) but he is bullied by Jake, the school’s QB, this angers Kara as she crushes the cafeteria table. During lunch, Kenny mentions how is invisible to the school but that allows him to hear things because they don’t see him there. Kenny then invites Kara out to a clearing in the woods. (By the way, I think the high school that Supergirl uses for Midvale High is the exact same school that Smallville used for Smallville High)

Once Kara arrives, she sees Kenny has set up a telescope and they see the stars. Kenny wonders what is out there and Kara says it is probably people looking down on Earth wondering the same thing. The two almost kiss but don’t.

The next morning, Kara overhears police sirens and hears a 17-year old boy’s body was found. Kara superspeeds and leaps to the murder scene and sees Kenny dead. Kara immediately suspects Jake had something to do with Kenny’s death and almost breaks his arm to get the truth. The truth is Kenny found Jake smoking pot and was going to tell, which was why he bullied him. But Jake was home all night and his mom can vouch for him.

Smallville’s Chloe Sullivan (Alison Mack) in front of her Wall of Weird

Kara pays a visit to the Li’s to pay her respects and Kenny’s mom mentions that his telescope is missing. Kara goes back to there she and Kenny were star-gazing. But also there is Alex who was secret friends with Kenny who was tutoring her in calculus. The two work together to find out what Kenny might have filmed using his camera that he downloaded on his laptop. Kara uses her x-ray vision to find the laptop. The girls bring it home and while water damaged, it still works but the files on it are encrypted. Kara suggests they call Clark’s friend Chloe who is good at computers and can help. Kara even mentions how Chloe has a Wall of Weird. This is the very first overt Smallville reference because if you are a fan of the show then you know the reference.

While snooping around, Kara and Alex find an email that Kenny sent to Mr. Bernard that reveals he is having inappropriate relations with a student, Josie, who happens to be Alex’s best friend. Alex confronts Josie about her affair and lets her know how wrong it is. But Josie tells Alex that they are in love and no one will blink twice about their age difference in 5 years time. Alex still thinks it is wrong and is going to tell the authorities about it. Josie then immediately goes to Mr. Bernard to say that Alex knows.

As Alex and Kara walk home, they talk about what they’ve found out so far but the two almost get run over by a car. The girls are thrown over a guard rail but Kara flies them to safety. The two girls tells Sheriff Collins their suspicions then Eliza arrives to take them home.

Once at home, Eliza berates Kara for being careless at using her powers and at almost being exposed. Eliza doesn’t think she is doing anything wrong since she save Alex. Eliza then gets Kara to speak to someone who she thinks she will listen to.

When Kara goes into the living room, she thinks her mom is there in a nice pant suit. However, it isn’t Alura but FBI Agent Noel Neill (named after the actress who played Lois Lane in The Adventures of Superman). Agent Neill knows all about Kara and also warns her how dangerous it is to use her powers. Kara tells Agent Neill how she remembers Krypton and being alone in her pod. Kara has also been miserable since landing on Earth and how she doesn’t fit in. Kara didn’t ask for her powers but since she has them, she wants to use them to help like Clark. Kara even asks if she can stay with Clark. Agent Neil tells Kara that she must stay where she is and asks about Krypton. Kara then tells Agent Neil, in Kryptonian “I love you, Mom”. Agent Neill apologizes that she doesn’t understand her and leaves. Once outside, we see that it was J’onn who was Agent Neill.

Josie then visits Alex to accuse her for ruining her relationship with Mr. Bernard because he was arrested over their relationship. Alex learns that Mr. Bernard was in custody at the time they were run over.

Alex head over to the football game and mentions the laptop to Sheriff Collins, who seems overly interested in the laptop and guides her to a quiet spot to talk. Alex finds it all suspicious and it is confirmed when Kara calls to say Chloe came back with the files decrypted. One of the photos was of Sheriff Collins conducting a drug deal. Just when it looks like Sheriff Collins is going to shoot and kill Alex, Kara defies her orders to be human and saves Alex.

This incident brings the two girls closer and the next day the two have lunch at school with Alex being a social pariah. There was one other photo that Chloe found but deleted off the computer and that was of Kara flying through the stars. Kara mentioned her almost kiss with Kenny and how he liked all of her. Later that night, the two girls are talking when Eliza comes in to say the Li’s have gifted them Kenny’s found telescope.

We then go back to the present and we see Kara looking through that telescope. Alex mentions how it was Kenny that brought them closer together. Alex thanks Kara for bringing them back home.

Alex and Kara return back to National City and Eliza wishes Alex well.

After Alex convinces Kara to let her drive, we see the Danvers sisters drive off along some lovely BC scenery.

And finally, next week we get the return of Mon-el!!!

  1. It was great to see Erica in a longer scene this time around.

I also liked how Erica tried to mimic the actor playing J’onn, as much as possible.
