Supergirl Season 2 “Ace Reporter” Recap

We are back after a long hiatus with an episode that is light on the DEO but heavy on showcasing Kara’s journalism side.
It seems that crime has taken some time off so there is nothing for Supergirl and the DEO to do. So Kara tries unsuccessfully her hand at baking. Lena drops by and wants her to accompany her to her ex-boyfriend’s press conference. Lena’s ex is Jack Spheer (iZombie’s Rahul Kohli) and the two dated for 2 years but before that built a start-up together for 5 years.

The two arrive at the press conference held at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Jack makes quite the entrance to introduce Bio Max, a nano swarm technology that he and Lena were working on but couldn’t quite get right. But Jack seems to have cracked the code. Jack slices his hand open and with help from his CFO, Beth Breen (Timeless’ Claudia Doumit) unleashes the nanostorm that heals his hand. Lena is impressed to see tech that she developed actually work. When Jack starts taking questions, Kara jumps up representing her blog. When Kara has some difficulty getting her question out, Snapper tries to hijack her time but she gets her courage back and asks about FDA regulations.

Jack, who saw Lena at the press conference earlier, meets up with her wanting to catch up. Kara comes by and Lena compliments her about her reporting skills. Kara blushes at the compliment but leaves so Lena and Jack can be alone. But Kara is met by Joe Watkins (Andrew McNee) who has information on Jack Spheer and asks to meet her that night in a parking lot. I want to note that Andrew McNee is an accomplished theatre actor in Vancouver and a favourite at Bard on the Beach. In fact, last year Andrew was excellent as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet and hilarious as Sir Hugh Evans in Merry Wives of Windsor.
When Kara goes to meet with Joe, he tells her he was recently fired by Spheerical Industries because he noted that the files on human trials were empty. However, we see the swarm of nanobots enter Joe’s car blowing him and the car up but not Kara.
Meanwhile, Guardian is out patrolling stopping criminals. When he goes back to the van, James’ finds Winn making out with Lyra (who knows James is Guardian). The two manage to convince James to let Lyra join their crime fighting team. But their team doesn’t quite work well because Lyra gets too aggressive with a teen criminal. Later, Winn has to tell Lyra that she is off the team but she doesn’t take it well at all. After another night of crime fighting, James sees that Winn is down from his fight with Lyra. James calls Winn his best friend who is like a brother and it is great to feel that way again. James then brings out Lyra and all three make up. James gets Lyra to promise to listen to him.
Back to the main action, Kara goes to visit James at CatCo asking him to file a Freedom of Information Act to find out more about Spheerical’s human trials. Snapper comes in to let James’ know about his lead and continues to throw journalistic shade at Kara. Kara leaves but overhears where Snapper is meeting his source.
At Snapper’s sources apartment, we learn that he was part of the human trial but in fact tested nothing but just signed some paper work. The nanoswarm arrives and Supergirl (who listening outsisde) swoops in to save Snapper but not the source.

Meanwhile, Jack pays Lena a visit at L Corp and convinces her to go out to dinner with him. When Kara comes home, Mon-el lets her know that Lena called and hoped that she would talk her out of having dinner with Jack. Kara decides to drag Mon-el with her to go on an impromptu double date. At the dinner, Kara gets Jack to tell Lena, her and Mon-el how he cracked the nanoswarm code.

Mon-el cuts their dinner date short as to not crowd them. Before he goes, Mon-el gives Jack a big hug but it was a ruse to steal his security pass to Spheerical.
When Kara and Mon-el break into Jack’s office, they find a video of him testing Bio Max on himself and we see the nanobots bond with Jack turning him to the nanoswarm. Kara realizes that Jack is the killer.
Lena and Jack have made their way back to her office and the two start to kiss. But Jack stops in his tracks when we see Kara downloading the video onto a thumb drive. The nanoswarm arrives and Kara and Mon-el flee.
The next morning, Kara shows Lena the video and gets her to promise not to confront Jack. Kara then goes back to CatCo to give Snapper all the evidence she has on Jack including the interview with the whistleblower. When Snapper mentions how the CFO Beth Breen has a lot of money riding on the success of Bio Max that Kara realizes something.
We know of course that Lena wouldn’t stay away and confronts Jack. However, Jack has no clue what Lena is talking about and she realizes he is telling the truth. Jack all of sudden stays in place and we see that Beth is controlling Jack via the nanobots. a side effect of the technology where people will lose their freewill. Beth gets Jack to try and inject Lena with Bio Max so she can also control L Corp. Supergirl flies and saves Lena. However, the nanoswarm attacks Supergirl while Lena takes on Beth. Eventually, Supergirl is pinned down by the nanoswarm and Lena crushes the mind controlled device. Unfortunately, the only way to stop the nanoswarm is to override its programming. But this kill Jack while saving Supergirl. Jack tells Lena to override the nanobots. Lena does thus freeing Supergirl but killing Jack.

The next day, Beth is in jail and Kara pays Lena a visit. Lena tells Kara that she feels nothing after everything that has happened. We then see Kara vow to always be there for Lena.
At CatCo, Snapper shows the Spheerical article that he wrote and shows her that he shared the byline with her. Snapper credits Kara’s interview with the whistleblower as the key to beating their competition. Snapper the offers Kara her job back because they need reporters like her. Earlier in this scene, Kara offers Snapper a danish that she baked and Snapper offers a tip on how to make it right. Kara is surprised that Snapper knows how to bake. I would like to think that this was a shout to Ian Gomez’s gig as co-host to The Great American Baking Show.
At episode’s end, Lena is still mourning Jack when she gets a visitor who offers her condolences. This visitor is Rhea and has a proposition for her. Was it just me or did Rhea in her Earth outfit and haircut look exactly like she did as Lois Lane in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. And when I saw look like, I mean look like as she did back them. It’s as if Teri Hatcher hasn’t aged one bit.
