The Flash Season 3 “Into the Speed Force” Recap

At the end of the last episode, Wally swapped places with Savitar to spend eternity in the Speed Force. This week, Barry vows to Joe and Iris that he will go into the Speed Force to get Wally back. Team Flash knows it is dangerous as both could get stuck there forever but HR comes up with an idea that Cisco can come up with a device to tether Barry to them while he is in the Speed Force that they can quickly pull him back if he is in danger.
Before Barry leaves, he talks to Iris knowing that he probably has irrevocably lost her but their relationship remains in questionable.

Cisco vibes him into the Speed Force and once he emerges, he is in the CCPD and there is Eddie Thawne. But this isn’t Eddie but the Speed Force. Eddie wonders why Barry is back in the Speed Force. When barry says it is to find Wally, Eddie informs him that he isn’t at the CCPD but where future Barry had placed Savitar and it is a miserable place. Barry realizes that Wally is the one that is suffering a fate worse than death. Eddie then tells Barry that he lied to the Speed Force when they gave him back his speed. Last season when Barry was in the Speed Force, he said he made peace with his mom’s death but lied and created Flashpoint. This displeased the Speed Force. Eddie then tells Barry of the life that he could have lived if it wasn’t for him such as marrying into the West family. Eddie finally allows Barry to leave to find Wally but he has to out run a Time Wraith, which he does and it leads him to STAR Labs. Once there, he sees Caitlin with a baby girl, a daughter she could have had with Ronnie.

The Speed Force then appears as Ronnie who talks about the people that sacrificed themselves for him. Barry says he is willing to take Wally’s place but Ronnie remains skeptical but eventually he lets Barry go but this time he must face Hunter Zolomon’s Black Flash form. Just when the Black Flash is going to win, Barry removes the tether to escape and ends up in the Central City Hospital.

Barry finds Wally and also Leonard Snart. Snart tells Barry that Wally is in a loop where he is reliving the death of his mother over and over again. Snart refuses to let Barry take Wally’s place as he sees that Barry doesn’t really mean to sacrifice himself. Snart then tells Barry why the real Snart sacrificed himself in season 1 of Legends of Tomorrow and that is because Barry inspired him to be a hero. As Barry tries to go to Wally, Snart uses his cold gun to stop him and then on Barry but luckily Jay Garrick arrives and takes down Snart. When Snart tries to take out Jay, Barry flashes to grab Jay’s helmet to knock the cold gun blast back at Snart.

Jay tells Barry that Cisco came to his Earth to tell him what is going on and he has come to help and bring him and Wally home. Once inside the hospital room, Barry grabs Wally and tells him they are going home. However, Jay tells Barry that he is going to be the speedster that will remain in the Speed Force. Barry refuses to accept this but Jay insists it has to be him as Barry is the one that needs to fight Savitar and that he has lived a good life. Barry promises to get Jay out once everything is over.
Meanwhile, while Barry is in the Speed Force, Joe tells Iris to look what’s in her heart for the answers she is seeking regarding her and Barry.
And Jesse wants to go after Savitar using a piece of his armor to find his location. Team Flash realizes that the piece of his armor is vibrating as an indication as it wants to reunite with the rest of the suit. Jesse is ready to take on Savitar but HR tries to tell her not go after him but to wait for the real Flash. Jesse is hurt considering on her Earth she is the real Flash. HR tries to apologize for his faux pas but still insist that Jesse not face Savitar. Jesse knocks HR off and runs off to find Savitar. Jesse Quick does meet face to face with Savitar who tells her that she has plans for her in the future. The two engage in a fight but Jesse gets knocked flat on her back. HR wakes up and does help Jesse get out of Savitar’s clutches by using a piece of his armor to stab him beneath his suit. HR then tells Team Flash that Savitar isn’t a God at all but a man that can be hurt. This gives Team Flash some renewed hope at finding a way to defeat Savitar.
Barry makes it back to STAR Labs with Wally and tells the team of Jay’s sacrifice. A happy reunion occurs with all. Barry then tells Joe and Iris that Wally will be traumatized for a while at what he saw in the Speed Force and Kid Flash is going to be benched for a while.
Elsewhere in STAR Labs, Wally can’t believe that Jesse faced Savitar and she tells him that she is leaving because of what Savitar told her. Jesse is going to Earth 3 to replace Jay Garrick as that world’s Flash. The two exchange I love you’s and a kiss. This isn’t good bye for Jesse but she is now off to Earth-3.
At episode’s end, Iris and Barry have a heart-to-heart about their relationship. While the two love each other, Barry thinks the two needs to take a break as he needs to be the one that defeats Iris. Barry goes to live with Cisco while the two figure things out.
Next week we get a bit of a break since it is the musical episode that I am strangely looking forward to after being so dismissive of it at first.
