DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 “Moonshot” Recap

We are on the search for the last piece of the Spear of Destiny and Rip has taken the team to 1965 Manhattan where they’ve narrowly missed the past Rip dropping off Nate’s grandfather Henry Heywood aka Commander Steel off. Before Rip leaves, Henry gives him his dog tags to give to his son Hank.
Back on the Waverider, the Legends are figuring out where Henry would have gone. They determine that a military man like Henry would find a job in his wheelhouse and find him in Mission Control in Houston on April 13, 1970 during the Apollo 13 mission.

So the team infiltrate NASA and Henry is none too pleased to see Rip but is very happy to see his grandson Nate again. Nate figures that Henry is at Mission Control to help bring Apollo 13 back home after the incident in space. If you were a fan of Ron Howard’s Apollo 13 or of actual historical events of Apollo 13 then you know what happened. However, Henry has no clue what Nate is talking about as everything is going according to plan. Sara realizes something has happened that that something is Eobard Thawne took the place of Jack Swigert and knocked out Jim Lovell and Fred Haynes so he can take control of the lunar module and land on the moon. Why would Eobard want to do that? Well because Henry hid his piece of the spear in the flag that Neil Armstrong planted on the moon.
So Ray is tasked with getting on board Apollo 13 in his Atom suit to stop Eobard while Martin, Jax and Mick are in Mission Control to distract the command team there as to why they cannot contact Apollo 13. Henry is on board the Waverider to join the action.

When the Waverider comes upon Apollo 13, they see Eobard separate the LEM from the Command Module. Ray manages to sneak onboard the LEM but gets caught by Eobard. The two fight and Ray blasts Eobard with one of his lasers that causes Eobard to press a button that leads to the LEM hurtling towards the Moon’s surface. Ray manages to land on the Moon safely but it has no fuel to take off and the thrusters in his suit got damaged in his fight with Eobard. There is some good news though, Ray has captured Eobard who can’t use his super speed in space and he got the last piece of the spear. Bad news is the Waverider got badly damaged by meteor rocks when trying to save the Apollo 13 command module. The damage is so bad that they can’t pick up Ray.
So Ray is forced to work with Eobard to fix the LEM so it can take in power of the dwarf star alloy and lift them off the moon. The two eventually make it back to the Waverider and Eobard is thrown into the brig. Before hand, Ray manages to reconnect the LEM to the Command Module, communications with Mission Control are re-established and Apollo 13 makes it back to Earth and everyone in Houston cheers.
Meanwhile, Henry and Rip clear the air. It seems that Henry was pissed at Rip for tearing away from his family while Rip went home to his. Nate tells his grandfather that Rip lost his family which leads to the two to come to an understanding. Henry believes that when everything is over Rip will return him back to 1956 before he ever left so he can be there for his family. Nate is elated at this because his father was a cold man because Henry had left. But Amaya thinks it is a bad idea because it would be messing with the timeline. Nate is who he is because of what happened to him. But Nate is willing to change the timeline if it means happiness for his family. Nate then proceeds to tell Amaya a bit about her future in terms of what Ray told him about her village and her granddaughter. Amaya then tells Henry about the consequences of time travel and Henry realizes that he can’t go back.
Because the Waverider is so damaged there is an issue of it and everyone on board burning up on re-entry. A decision needs to be made as to the best course of action. Which leads us to a bit of a leadership issue brewing on the Waverider as both Rip and Sara are trying to lead the mission. When Ray gets critical information from Eobard to help them with re-entry, Rip defers to Sara’s decision.
As the descend into Earth’s atmosphere, they can’t quite get the correct angle. The solution is to open the cargo bay door but it needs to be done manually. Henry has volunteered to sacrifice himself. Nate tries to talk him out of it and to come back to he can meet his son that he rigged an essay writing contest where the prize was to see Mission Control. Henry believes he has done his part and asks Nate to tell his son that he was sorry he left. Henry then opens the cargo doors and is blow out.
But it worked and the Waverider lands safely. Amaya consoles Nate over the loss of his grandfather.
Once back on Earth, Eobard phases out of his cell. Ray is there to greet him and mentions that a time wraith is after him and Eobard watch goes off meaning one will be after him soon so he takes off.
At Mission Control, Nate meets his father and in a round about way tells him Henry’s message.
Later, Rip acknowledges that Sara is a way better leader than he ever was and feels a bit lost. Sara doesn’t think so and believes that Rip is a Legend.
Amaya finds Nate and apologizes for telling Henry what would happen if he went back. Amaya thinks is she didn’t say anything Henry wouldn’t have sacrificed himself but Nate thinks he would have anyways. When Nate leaves, Amaya makes Gideon tell her about the historical record of her village. Amaya sees her village in flames and then foster care documents for her granddaughter Mari and pictures of her too wearing her amulet.
