Last week, Oliver told Felicity that he will begin to keep Laurel’s promise of training a new Black Canary in order to keep her legacy alive. However, Team Arrow 2.0 present Oliver with a series of potential candidates that all seem perfectly good but he doesn’t give them a second glance.

When Curtis presents a candidate, it is the woman we saw at the tail end of last week who has been seen in Hub City taking down the criminal element. What really convinces Oliver to give her a look is the fact that she has a Canary Cry.

We begin this episode three years ago in Central City, moments before the particle accelerator explosion and we see Tina Boland all tied up and being tortured. Tina was an undercover cop infiltrating Sean Sonus’ (Steve Bacic) drug gang. To get Tina to talk, Sonus’ and his henchmen bring in her partner/lover Vinnie. Just at the particle accelerator explodes, Sonus kills Vinnie and Tina screams thus creating her Canary cry.

Fun Fact: Steve Bacic guest starred way back in Smallville season 9’s “Disciple” playing the Dark Archer, a nemesis of Justin Hartley’s Green Arrow.

On the team to recruit the potential new Black Canary is Oliver, Rene and Curtis. When the team arrives at Hub City and find Tina. They make their pitch but Tina isn’t interested in anything they have to say and uses her Canary cry to escape.

When the team gather at the local Big Belly Burger where Rene is chomping down on a three patty cheeseburger, Curtis manages to identify Tina as a former CCPD cop. To find out more about Tina, Oliver calls Captain Singh as the Green Arrow, However. Singh isn’t convinced that he is speaking to the Green Arrow. Oliver quickly texts Barry and the Flash blurs in and leaves a Post-It note to say that he is legit. So Singh tells all he knows about Tina which I believe leads the team to start investigating Sonus.

With that information, the team manage to find Tina’s address and when they arrive at her apartment, we see that she has captured one of Sonus’ henchmen and torturing him. The Green Arrow tries to reason with Tina but again uses her Canary cry but it stop working when Rene uses the sonic dampener. However some damage has been done as Tina’s captive is killed by her cry. Sonus’ men arrive on the scene and start shooting up the place. Rene takes them while Oliver goes after Tina. Again, the Green Arrow tries to recruit her but Tina is laser focused on her mission to take down Sonus and uses her cry to escape.

Back at the Big Belly Burger, the team regroups and this time Rene is chomping down on a five patty cheeseburger. Oliver realizes that Tina’s Canary cry is more powerful than Black Siren’s and she has more control over it. Curtis then gives the low down on Sonus and how he moved over to Hub City to take over the drug trade after Tobias Church left town.

Eventually, the team find out where Sonus is but Tina is also there too. Unfortunately for our heroes and Tina, Sonus is also a meta-human that has sonic powers but instead of a cry, he does something with his eyes that causes people to get dizzy and collapse.

With Tina unconscious, the team takes her and when she wakes up, they try once again to convince her to join Team Arrow. Tina still refuses to join.

Team gets a heads up of a big drug deal going down with Sonus and knows that Tina is going to confront Sonus there. Olive intercepts Tina and reveals his identity to her and goes through his 5 years in hell to her and asks Tina to let his team help take down Sonus. Tina reluctantly agrees to get Team Arrow’s help.

On a roof top, Team Arrow and Tina battle out with Sonus and his men. When Sonus tries to use his powers on them, Rene uses the sonic dampener to neutralize Sonus’ powers. Eventually, Tina manages to trap Sonus at gun point ready to kill him. Olive tries to talk Tina down from becoming a murderer and to think about what her partner would want her to do. Tina heads up pumping Sonus with tons of bullets in his chest thus killing him. Tina tells Oliver that her partner would have wanted her to do just that.

Later, Tina visits Oliver at his mayor’s office. Tina realizes that Oliver was right and that she does not feel better after killing Sonus and decides to take up on his offer to join Team Arrow. Oliver welcomes Tina to the team and she corrects him to say her real name is Dinah Drake. Oliver chuckles and when Dinah asks why, he says that he had a friend named Dinah (Laurel) and she was the reason why he sought her out.

Elsewhere, Felicity taps into her hacktivist roots to spring Diggle out of prison. Felicity is trying to hack into the NSA to find a file against General Walker. When Felicity encounters a dead end, she gets some help from a hacktivist group called Helix. Felicity meets up with the person she was chatting with only to discover it is a woman very similar to herself. This woman gives Felicity a USB key that contains tons of confidential and high security clearance NSA files. This woman also seems to inspire Felicity to use her hacktivist skills to help Team Arrow. When Felicity opens the USB key tons of files come on screen including when that lets Diggle out on bail.

In the Russian Flashback, Oliver wakes up after being rescued from the Bratva gang by Talia Al Ghul. Talia knows a lot about Oliver’s time on Lian Yu. Talia asks why Oliver wears the hood of her pupil Yao Fei. Oliver is perplexed at how a woman who is half the age of Yao Fei trained him, Talia mentions her youthful looks is a family secret. Talia actually never reveal her name to Oliver which explains why never mentions to Ra’s or to Nyssa that he met their daughter/sister. Talia doesn’t understand why Oliver wants to go after Kovar and promises to help if he takes out Yuriewich, someone that supplies young woman to Kovar. So Talia and Oliver go out to confront Yuriewich and Oliver kills him.

Later, Talia asks why Oliver never went to his family when he returned to Starling City and why he has forgotten his true mission which is to tackle his father’s list. Oliver tells Talia the reason why he hasn’t visited or started his mission is because he is no longer the person his family thinks he is that he is now a monster. Talia tells Oliver that he can shed all of that by becoming something else, someone else and present him with the season 1 Green Arrow/the Hood costume. When Oliver can do that, he can still be Oliver Queen and Talia will help with that. And for the first time all season I became interested in the Russian Flashback.
