Let’s give a standing ovation to Chyler Leigh who tonight gave such a heart-breaking performance after coming to the realization that she was gay and then getting rejected from her girl-crush Maggie. I totally broke down in tears and felt her heart-break as she sobbed as her sister Kara comforted her.
Before Maggie breaks her heart, she encourages Alex to come out to Kara and will be there for her when she does. Alex does tell Kara and says that perhaps she has always felt this way. Kara seems speechless at first and Alex misinterprets this as a rejection. However, later Kara tells Alex that it was a rejection but more of a realization at how Alex always put her first in keeping her secrets that she wasn’t always there for her. Kara then proceeds to ask about Maggie and Alex gushes all the things she likes about her.
At the alien bar, Alex tells Maggie that she told Kara and it went well. As Maggie goes to get celebratory drinks, Alex pulls her in for a kiss. Maggie isn’t surprised at this turn of events but tells Alex that while flattered she doesn’t want to be the first girl she explores her sexuality with as those never turn out well but she will be there as a friend. Alex leaves the bar and is drinking away her sorrows in her apartment when Kara swoops in to offer her comfort.
While Alex was going through all of that, there was work to be done to defeat Parasite, a famous Superman villain.
We open the episode at the Thorul Arctic Research Facility in Norway where a bunch of climate change researchers have stumbled upon a 5000-year old wolf that was buried in ice but is still warm. As one of the scientists, Rudy Jones (William Mapother) examines the wolf, he gets attacked. Next thing we know the DEO have arrived to find all the scientists dead except for Jones. The DEO bring him back to their HQ and after Jones checks out fine, he returns to his research lab in National City University. While doing his research, he sees his DNA changing and starts to refer to himself as we. When his boss comes in to effective fire him, Jones drains the life force out of him. When they find Jones there Supergirl goes in for the attack but she drains some of Supergirl’s powers and flees.
Back at the DEO, Winn determines that it is an alien parasite that has taken over Jones. When James hears what happened to Kara, he rushes to DEO and wants to suit up right away but Winn tells him his suit isn’t ready and if he rushes it, he will die. This convinces James to stand down until his suit is ready.
Parallel to this Kara is trying to train Mon-el to use his powers and he only agreed after she downed an alien drink that made her hilariously drunk. Mon-el isn’t taking the training seriously as he has no interest in playing hero. Kara discovers that Mon-el new job is as a muscle for hire, a job she doesn’t approve of. Kara tries to convince Mon-el to use his powers for good but he says that her life and not his.
When word gets out that Jones is targeting a climate change denier, Supergirl and the Martian Manhunter confront him. Unfortunately, Jones drains both of them of their powers and he transforms into his Parasite form leaving the drained bodies of Kara and J’onn behind.
Back at the DEO, Kara has sun lamps on her and will be fine but J’onn requires a blood transfusion from another Martian. Alex goes to the alien bar to get M’gann and while there sees Mon-el drinking away and she berates him for just sitting there and doing nothing and tells him that Kara believes in him.
When Alex brings M’gann to the DEO, she learns that she is supposed to give J’onn her blood. M’gann is reluctant but Alex misinterprets her reluctance. After hearing Alex’s pleading, M’Gann agrees. We all know that M’Gann is a White Martian and she knows J’onn won’t be happy to have White Martian blood in him if/when he finds out. J’onn ends up being okay and thanks M’Gann for saving him and the two share a moment. Not quite sure if this is something but J’onn’s hand starts to shake. Is that because J’onn has White Martian blood in him.
With Kara down for the count, it is time for Guardian to make his debut to face Parasite. After finding out where Parasite is heading, we see Mon-el confront but he soon gets in Parasite grasp. But Guardian swoops in with an explosive device so Parasite drops Mon-el. Guardian holds his own especially with his cool shield that repels Parasite’s hits. Meanwhile, Mon-El stops a flying car from hitting a little girl. A now healed Kara arrives and over loads Parasite with plutonium that causes it to explode. Kara tells Mon-el that she is proud of him for helping out and wonders who the new hero in town is as his suit is made of lead and can’t see his identity. Guardian then rides away on his motorcycle.
At CatCo, James and Winn recount the previous nights events and decide that they will continue to work as a team with James as the Guardian and Winn as the man in the van offering tech assistance. Superfriends lives indeed. And both agreed to keep their crimefighting from Kara for now.
At episode’s end, Mon-el is walking the streets when he hears a homeless person in distress. With his new-found sense of heroism, Mon-el asks if he is alright but instead of helping, he instead gets kidnapped Dr. Lilian Luthor and Cadmus labs.
