Arrow Season 5 “Human Target” Recap

The last episode saw Tobias Church capture Rene and as we open up this week’s episode, he isn’t in good shape. Church has beaten Rene to a bloody pulp opening he will spill who is the Green Arrow. Rene won’t budge but manages to get Church to reveal his plans for Star City and it involves using its ports to dominate his drug trade in not only Star City but also surrounding cities like Bludhaven and Hub City. Church then tells Rene that fear of pain is so much worse and goes to beat him up some more.

As Rene starts to dig his grave, Green Arrow arrives but Church flees. Oliver realizes that Church wanted to flee and Rene apologizes to his leader that he gave up his identity to the drug lord.
Later, Church is met my an angry Prometheus. Prometheus is pissed that Church is still going after the Green Arrow and goes to kill him but a man in a mask that reminds me of the knights of Hogwarts jumps in the way to deflect Prometheus arrow.
Back at the Arrow Cave, Felicity figures it is easier to get rid of Mayor Oliver Queen than the Green Arrow. With that being the case, Diggle knows someone who can help with that. So to prevent Church from going after his loved ones Oliver sends Evelyn and Rory to protect Quentin and Thea while Curtis is tasked to protect Lyla and JJ. Oliver asks Diggle to go to Rene to see if he can remember anything during his captivity that will help them figure out Church’s plan.
In Mayor Land. Lance is tasked to recruit more members to the ACU and one of those people happens to be Felicity’s new beau, Billy Malone. Also, Oliver is meeting with Councilman Collins who is a holdout on a crucial re-zoning vote that will help build more affordable housing in Star City. During this meeting, everyone’s favourite reporter, Susan Williams is present as she is doing a profile on Collins. Collins is still holding out his vote because he believes that instead of affordable housing being built, big skyscrapers would be built in its place and the last time something this tried to happen, Queen Consolidated was built instead.
Later on, Oliver agrees to an off-camera interview with Susan despite Thea’s objections. When alone, Oliver asks why Susan is attacking his administration. Susan cites his lack of experience, which he agrees but wants her to give him a month to prove her wrong. Susan agrees and gives him her personal cell number.
Oliver then meets again with Collins and gets his vote because he realized that Collins was against re-zoning because it would affect some investments in the area.
Thea is impressed with Oliver but the congratulations are short-lived as they are attacked by Church’s hired gun. Thea makes to safety but Oliver and his security team are dead.
At a press conference, Lance announces that Oliver is dead and speaks glowingly about him.

Watching the press conference in the Arrow Cave is Arrow Team 2.0, Felicity and Oliver! We see another Oliver step out of the elevator and removes his mask. The faux Oliver introduces himself as Christopher Chance (Wil Traval) aka the Human Target.
Later, Chance and Oliver have a talk about how Chance managed to get Collins to change his vote and getting Susan’s number. Chance says that he should call Susan and be Oliver Queen more and not always the Green Arrow. Oliver says that the Oliver Queen part of himself is always the best part of him. Chance then spills the beans that Felicity is dating Billy Malone. Oliver didn’t know and finds out that Malone thought Oliver knew. We saw earlier have some afternoon delight that Felicity lied to Malone that she told her ex-fiancee that she is dating a member of his ACU.
Oliver then pays a visit on Felicity’s balcony and the two have a heart-to-heart. Felicity isn’t sure what she has with Malone is real and later Oliver tells her that she should see if it is something. And Oliver says he will work on moving on too. But from the looks they were giving each other, it sure looks like their relationship or Oliciity is far from over.
At Diggle’s new digs, Rene arrives and the two get to know each other and share their military pass with each other. Diggle manages to get Rene to remember something important.
Rene relays to Team Arrow 2.0 that Church is at an airstrip bringing together his entire drug cartel to set things in motion.
The entire team suits up including Spartan and go after Church. Everyone is in awe at how a badass Spartan is while Wild Dog and Church fight. When Ragman and Artemis are cornered but someone looking like a Church thug rescues them and we see it is Chance.
Church gets away and is in the hangar where the Green Arrow is there to meet him. The two battle and Green Arrow finally takes him down and before dealing the knock out blow, Church tells him Prometheus is gunning for him.
The next day, Oliver holds a press conference to apologize for faking his death but felt it was necessary to stop Church and his drug empire. And it did work and everyone is now behind bars. Another mayoral victory is the re-zoning vote passed and now affordable housing can be built.
Russian Flashback
Olive is officially welcomed as part of the Bratva though Viktor is not so welcoming. As Oliver and Anatoli sip celebration drinks, Oliver tells him that he hasn’t gone to Tiana’s family, the reason why he came to Russia and after Kova. Anatoli tells Oliver to just celebrate and relax and suggests having fun with a pretty blonde. When Oliver sees the blonde get roughed up by some thugs. he follows them outside. Before doing so, another Bratva members tries to stop him from going outside but he ignores him. When Oliver goes to the alleyway, it was all a trap as the thugs pounce on him and intend to kill him. However, the fellow Bratva guy who tried to stop Oliver earlier, saves the day and kills the thugs. Before fleeing, the man reveals himself to be Christopher Chance and Anatoli paid him to protect Oliver.
Back in the present day, Susan pays off a guy that gives her information that Oliver was in Russia when he was supposed to be on Lian Yu and shows her a photograph of his Bratva ceremony.
As the episode ends, Church is being driven to Iron Heights but the whole convoy is ambushed by Prometheus who kills everyone. When Church gives up Oliver as the Green Arrow, he thinks he will be spared but alas no, Prometheus kills him.
So who is Prometheus? Why do I like the idea that maybe it is Tommy Merlyn that I’ve heard as a guess. I really have no clue who it is but I have a feeling it is someone we have seen over these past 5 season.
