The Flash Season 3 “Monster” Recap

We finally get to know Julian as the chill between him and Barry starts to thaw while the relationship between Caitlin and her mother grows icier as the former seeks the latter’s help in figuring out her burgeoning powers.
Before Julian and Barry come to an understanding, Julian is trying to get Barry fired by snitching to Captain Singh all the rule violations that he has broken. Instead of getting punished or fired, Singh just gives him a warning that further riles up Julian.

Barry is called in to deal with a meta human alert and when he arrives he sees a really big monster that takes out car alarms, security cameras and power transformers around it. Cisco is flying blind but a suggestion from HR allows him to track the monster ever so briefly.
Speaking of HR, he is trying very hard to gain Team Flash’s trust but Cisco isn’t buying anything HR is selling. When HR has a suggestion in a way to stop the monster, Cisco goes to work on it but HR gets on his nerves. When Cisco leaves, HR records in his pen that Team Flash doesn’t now the true reason why he is on Earth-1.
In order to help track the monster that is now a police case, Barry plays to Julian’s vanity and is able to observe him like an intern in exchange to have the lab all to himself. Barry wants a better understanding as to why Julian hates meta-humans Julian states that meta-humans are wasting their powers for evil purposes instead of doing good. When Julian lets Barry in on a crime scene, we learn that he dislikes the Flash because his appearance has led the police to become complacent. The monster appears and Julian tries to shoot it but then something almost falls on him that forces Barry to speed him to safety.
Back at STAR Labs, HR behaviour just makes Barry and Cisco more suspicious so they search through his stuff and discover his pen. HR catches them and has to explain that in addition to being a scientist, he is also an author and is on Earth-1 to write his sci-fi romance novel titled something like “The Adventures of HR Wells”.

When the CCPD are alerted to the monster’s appearance, the Flash arrives with the cable that the team fashioned. Cisco is looking to HR for suggestions but when Cisco comes up with something, HR just repeats it back to him. When the Flash tries to take down the monster by tying it legs together, he discovers it is a hologram. Since it is a hologram, the Flash has to go and stop a police sniper bullet that passes through it.
Cisco then asks HR to do something on the computer to help track the monster’s origins when he realizes that HR is just faking everything. Cisco finds the monster at an office tower. Julian is there and shoots the person at the helm of the monster hologram but the Flash stops the bullet and we it is just a 15-year old kid. Julian thanks the Flash for stopping him from doing something stupid. Joe then talks to the teen and learns he created the monster because he was being bullied and he wanted to have people fear him and feel powerful.
At STAR Labs, HR never answered the audition riddle but his partner did. HR was just the face on his Earth of STAR Labs, the ideas man but didn’t execute anything. Earth-19 found out about him and he decided to flee. The team calls him one big con artist but HR wants to earn his stripes so Barry gives a couple of weeks to prove his worth. Who do you think is HR’s partner on Earth-19? I am curious to know considering he is the brains behind HR.
Back at Barry’s lab, Julian tells Barry how he almost killed a kid. Julian then reveals how he comes from money. ancient family money that he is to inherit. However, Julian rejected the money to become a scientist and becomes a great one. But when Julian arrived at Central City, he is confronted with meta-humans, something he can’t figure out in his role of a scientist. Julian then tells Barry that he also has a better understanding of the Flash. Julian then tells Barry that he can stay at the lab and the two then go out for drinks.
Elsewhere, Iris is trying to convince Joe to go out with Celeste the DA and Barry is staying with Cisco until he finds a new place.
The Birth of Killer Frost
Caitlin takes time off of Team Flash to visit her mom, Dr. Tannhauser and we right away the two have a icy relationship. Caitlin wants her mom’s help with a patient but when Dr. Tannhauser tries to brush Caitlin off, this forces her to use her powers to get her attention.
Dr. Tannhauser and her assistant Nigel are going to run a battery of test to see who Caitlin’s powers work. Once such test involves Caitlin to completely cool a very hot piece of tungsten. Nigel notices Caitlin’s vitals and it seems these stats are useful to whatever work that Dr. Tannhauser is doing.
Dr. Tannhauser explains that Caitlin absorbed all of the energy from the tungsten. Caitlin then calls her mom and being so cold towards her. It seems this coldness started when Caitlin’s dad died which became the moment that her mom also died emotionally to her daughter. Dr. Tannhauser tries to explain that Caitlin doesn’t understand that can of loss but Caitlin does and relates how her husband, Ronnie, died a year ago.
When Caitlin goes to leave, Nigel tries to keep her prisoner as he is sick of being under Dr. Tannhauser’s thumb and needs Caitlin and her powers to help with that. However, Caitlin grabs Nigel’s arm and freezes it but lets it go when her mom comes in. We see Caitlin with those Killer Frost’s eyes and manages to stop hurting Nigel when Dr. Tannhauser apologies to Caitlin for their relationship.
After Caitlin gets back to STAR Labs, she receives a video message from her mom that tells her that each time she uses her powers, it becomes irreversible. We see Caitlin get the Killer Frost eyes and freezes her computer terminal in anger.
I am guessing once Caitlin goes all Killer Frost, she will be a villain.
