The Flash Season 2 “Fast Lane” Recap

The meta human of the week really had nothing much to contribute in this episode that really was more about the West dynamic and Harry’s conflicted feelings over helping Zoom to save his daughter at the expense of Team Flash.
Fast and the Furious
The Wests are have a nice family dinner where Wally tells his father and sister that when he was younger he wanted to be an astronaut because he liked the speed aspect of it. Iris throws a wet blanket on the proceedings by bringing up Wally’s penchant for speed racing. Wally doesn’t want to get into an argument so leaves. Joe admonishes Iris for making Wally leave by bringing up the speed racing. Iris turns the tables on her dad for being Wally’s friend than father and not acting like the dad she knows.
Iris then goes to one of Wally’s races and wonders why he is still racing since he no longer has to pay for medical bills. Wally tells Iris it is none of her business and leaves as the race is about to begin. We learn that Wally’s race nickname is Taillights and Iris takes a picture of the race organizer, Clark Bronwen.
At the Central City Picture News, Iris is working on her story on street racing and shows Joe a file she compiled on people who died from it. Iris wants Joe to be Wally’s father but he is reluctant because he just lost him mom and is thrust into this instant family. Joe is afraid to push Wally away.
Iris decides to pay Bronwen a visit to try and get him to stop the races and threatens him with her expose. However, Bronwen threatens her if he publishes the story. Luckily, Iris recorded their conversation so she is safe.
More on this in the meta human of the week section.
Metahuman of the Week: Tar Pit
The episode opens two years ago and we get the origin story of how Joey becomes Tar Pit which of course involves him getting dumped into a vat of tar by some thugs: Daniel and Calvin. In the present day, Tar Pit emerges from his hibernation seeking revenge on those who wronged him,
Tar Pit’s first victim is Daniel and using the tar found at the scene of the crime, STAR Labs determines that Daniel suffocated from tar.
Tar Pit is about to go after his next victim Calvin. The Flash arrives stops Tar Pit from harming Calvin stopped by the Flash but the meta gets away.
The next time Tar Pit appears is at one of Wally’s races because Iris identified Bronwen as being part of the gang mixed up with Calvin and Daniel during their life of crime.

Tar Pit upends Wally’s car and before anything bad can happen, the Flash saves him. The other driver’s car isn’t in the greatest shape and pieces of it start to fly towards Iris. The Flash does his best to catch the pieces but a piece of glass impales Iris’ shoulder. The Flash rushes Iris to the hospital where we learn that Iris is okay. Wally pays Iris a visit but things are a bit awkward and goes to leave. Joe goes after Wally to say that he needs to be there for Iris and says he is his father and that they are there for him. Wally stays with Iris as Joe takes care of Tar Pit. In Iris’ room, Wally shares why he still street races and it is because it reminds of car trips he used to take with his mom.

Helping Dr. Wells
Harry is working on a device that will help in steal the Flash’s speed when it is hidden in his suit.
With Patty gone, Barry decides to keep himself busy by offering to help Harry on figuring out how to close the portals. However, Harry doesn’t want Barry’s help as he rather work alone. Barry insists they are a team but Harry says closing the breaches involves complicated science that Barry needs to read up if he wants to help. Barry uses his speed to speed read the text books and is able to help Harry.
When the Flash was off saving Calvin, Harry notes that the device was working and managed to steal a bit of his speed. Afterwards, Cisco notes that Barry seemed a bit slower than normal but Barry thinks the difference in his speed his negligible.
We then see Harry meet with Zoom to give him the Flash’s speed. Harry thinks he will get his daughter back but alas no.
While working, Barry talks about how Earth-1 Wells was a mentor to him and also like a father. During the conversation, Harry tells Barry that when it comes between choosing between his daughter and Team Flash, he will choose his daughter and he will betray them. Barry shows Harry something that Earth-1 Wells devised that would help close the breaches. The two go and test device and it works. One breach down 51 more to go.
Back at STAR Labs, Barry knows that his speed has slowed down because he wasn’t fast enough to save Iris. Caitlin confirms that his speed force has declined. Team Flash is trying to figure out why that could be as Barry worries that if he has slowed down then he can’t save people that he cares about. Harry then admits to stealing a bit of his speed to give to Zoom and shows them the device he made hidden in the Flash’s suit. Everyone feels betrayed and Joe punches him and throws him in the pipeline.
Team Flash deal with Wells later as they are off to stop Tar Pit, which they do with some device that solidifies his tar form.
Back at the pipeline, Barry wants to know why Harry betrayed them. Harry replies that he did it to save his daughter but now he has doomed his daughter to death. Harry wants Team Flash to send him back to Earth-2 and then close the portals.
In the cortex, Barry realizes that all of them would have made the same decision as Harry because when it comes to family you would do anything. Barry wants to help Harry save Jesse and Team Flash agrees and release Harry to tell them they are off to Earth-2 to save Jesse.
I am looking forward to seeing this episode and seeing everyone’s Earth-2 counterparts like Killer Frost and Deathstorm!
