The Flash Season 2 “The Reverse-Flash Returns” Recap

There was a lot talk about time travel in this episode that was a bit confusing but this was a pretty fine hour of TV. Also, I am sad to see Shantel VanSanten go as Patty Spivot. I really loved her on this show and with Barry. Too bad that Patty was never going to be Barry’s end game love interest, which of course is Iris.
Farewell Mama West
Speaking of Iris. Joe tells Iris that her mom is dying and doesn’t have long. Joe has said his good byes and suggests that Iris do the same. When Iris sees Francine, she wishes that she came back sooner so they could have been a family. But Iris does forgive her mom and she tells Joe that she doesn’t understand why she is taking this so hard since she barely knew her mom. Iris goes to see Wally to find out why he hasn’t been to see their mom. Iris thinks it is because Wally is angry at Francine for lying to him about her and Joe’s existence but she felt the same way not knowing about him. Iris says a few more words that eventually convinces Wally to go see his mom if Iris comes with.

Barry is distancing himself from Patty after their breakup and keeping things professional after she seeks his help on case that involved the Flash stopping a out of control chemical truck. Iris tries to convince Barry to get Patty to stay but he doesn’t want to stop her dream of becoming a CSI.
Later, when Patty sees Barry talking to Caitlin about finding Jay’s doppleganger that she learns he and Joe have been working with STAR Labs on some cases. This causes Patty to look into Barry’s old cases and sees that it mostly involves the Flash and contains details that he couldn’t possibly know as a CSI. Patty deduces that Barry is the Flash and confronts Joe with this. Joe does a bad job lying and he tells Barry that Patty knows the truth and he should just tell her. Barry doesn’t want to for fear of Zoom, the Reverse-Flash and other meta-humans would use people that he cares about against him.
Patty sees Barry in his lab and begs him to admit that he is that Flash because if he is then she will stay. Alas, Barry says he isn’t and Patty leaves. Later as Patty is on the train to Midway City, she calls Barry to say there is a shooter on board. The Flash arrives and there is nothing. Patty and the Flash have a conversation and without saying the words, pretty much admits to Patty that Barry Allan is the Flash. The Flash leaves and Patty says farewell to Barry.
Finding Jay a Cure
Caitlin tells Barry that Jay is dying and thinks the best way to cure him is to take cells from his Earth-1 doppleganger into him. Alas, Jay doesn’t have an Earth-1 counterpart. Caitlin then tells Jay of her plan and he brings her to a park to show her his Earth-1 doppleganger but his name isn’t Jay Garrick but Hunter Zolomon and his cells won’t work since Jay’s DNA is mutated. The only way to cure Jay is to capture Zoom.
The Reverse-Flash Returns
Team Flash learns that the Turtle is dead coincidentally on the same day he was captured.
To help capture Zoom, Cisco believe he needs to vibe. Harry figures out that adrenaline causes Cisco to vibe to dresses as the Reverse-Flash to scare him and he vibes that the Reverse-Flash attacks Mercury Labs.
The Flash stops the attack and calls out Eobard Thawne. Thawne is surprised that the Flash knows him but he disappears with Dr. Magee.
Everyone is surprised that Thawne is back thinking he shouldn’t be since Eddie killed himself. Harry explains that this Thawn is from a time where he hadn’t traveled back to kill Barry’s mom. Unfortunately, Barry’s mom is still gets murdered even with this Thawne in their timeline

We see that Thawne has taken Dr. Magee to a Mercury Labs offsite location that contains a tachyon portal. Thawne wants Magee to get it working so he can return home or he will kill her.
Harry develops googles to help trigger Cisco’s vibes and he sees Magee finish her work for Thawne before getting killed by him.
Team Flash realizes they have time to save Magee as Cisco saw the future.
When Team Flash gets alerted to the tachyon portal being powered up, Flash arrives in time to stop Thawne from killing Magee and the two engage in a battle. The Flash brings in Thawne and he is imprisoned in the pipeline.
Barry wants to talk to Thawne but Harry convinces him not to as this will disrupt the timeline. But Cisco visits Thawne and taunts him that he caught him and it was from the powers that he gave him. As Cisco leaves, he gets another nosebleed that he got earlier after Thawne was caught.
In shadows, Barry visits Thawne and asks why he hates him so much. Thawne says that he always didn’t but wanted to be like him and figured how. Thawne soon realized he couldn’t be like him so instead became the opposite of him. Instead of saving lives he would take, etc…. Their conversation is cut short when Caitlin calls Barry back to the cortex.
We soon see that Cisco starts having seizures and his nose his bleeding and he is starting phase in and out. Harry says that capturing Thawne disrupted the timeline that looks like is causing Cisco to disappear from the timeline. Harry says the only way to save Cisco is to send Thawne back to the future. Barry is conflicted as he doesn’t want to let Thawne go but knows he has to to save Cisco. Since Barry destroyed the portal that would have taken Thawne home the only way to get him back to the future is to use their combined speeds to open up a time portal.
Just before they leave, Thawne states he knows what time period Barry is from and plans to use it against him Harry tells Barry that this moment is the one where Thawne learns about all of them and STAR Labs; this moment is his origin story. So the Flash and Reverse-Flash run and a portal is open and the Reverse-Flash goes back to the future thus saving Cisco.
