Supergirl Season 1 Episode 9 “Blood Bonds” Recap

We are back after a brief break for Christmas and we immediately pick up were the last episode left off and that is Non and Supergirl engaging in a battle…
Blood bonds
The end result of Non versus Supergirl is that the Krytonians end up taking Henshaw hostage. With Henshaw out, the DEO emergency protocol has named Alex as acting director. Kara and Alex go to Astra to find out where Non has taken Henshaw. Kara tries to appeal to the emotional side of Astra but she refuses to say anything. Astra then has a flashback to her trial on Krypton where we see Alura condemn Non and Astra to life imprisonment on Fort Rozz for their terrorist attack on the people of Krypton.
Non calls into the DEO to say that he wants Astra for Henshaw and they have 48 hours to comply.
Alex reign of the DEO is short lived when General Lane comes in with orders from the President that tasks him to head the DEO and retrieve Henshaw.
Lane visits Astra and tells hero of his fear of aliens. Using liquid kryptonite, Lane injects Astra with it in hopes of her revealing where Henshaw is. Kara tries to stop Lane from torturing her aunt but she becomes too weakened with the surrounding kryptonite.
Astra does give up a location but when Alex, Supergirl, Lane’s men arrive at a containment yard, to quote Admiral Ackbar “It’s a trap”. Kara saves Alex from the explosion by shielding her with her body and manages to save some of Lane’s men too.
Kara visits her aunt again and this time is more open to listen to what really happened. Astra tells Kara how Alura believed Astra on what is happening to Krypton but not her methods to get people to listen. As Alura sends her sister to Fort Rozz, she tells her that she will use compassion to get Astra’s cause out.

Against Lane’s orders, Alex and Supergirl agree Non’s demands. Lane tries to stop them but his soldiers stand down as Supergirl saved their lives.
The exchange is successful but Non turns the tables and surrounds Alex, Supergirl, Henshaw and the DEO with Krytonian soliders. Alex asks Henshaw to transform but it isn’t necessary as Astra gets her men to stand down to honour the deal. Astra tells Kara that it isn’t compassion that got her to stop her men. Kara knows it and realizes that their war is just beginning.
With Henshaw back, Lane is relieved of his temporary role of DEO director.
Later on, Kara gets Alex and Henshaw to fess up that he is from Mars and wishes they could have told her as she can keep a secret. Alex and Henshaw disagree.
What’s up with Max?
Lord blames the attack on Lord Technologies as corporate espionage but of course our Superfriends know otherwise. James decides to do some snooping and learns from Lord that he plans to do something against the Kryptonians. Not wanting to worry Kara, James gets Winn to help him break into Lord Technologies to find out what is going on. While James is exploring within the bowels of Lord Technologies, Winn notices a room that required biometrics to open. Before anything more can happen, James is knocked out and gets beaten up by Lord who warns him to keep out of his business.

When Kara finds out what Winn and James have been up to she gets livid and wants to go after Lord. Kara’s anger reminds James and Winn of Astra and don’t want her to go down that path. Kara is so distraught over everything that is happening (Henshaw’s capture, her Aunt Astra) but Winn and James manage to calm her down before she does anything she would regret.
Cat on the prowl
Cat is still convinced that Kara is Supergirl and keeps on calling her that throughout the episode. Cat questions Kara about her youth, which she passes with flying colours. But none of that will deter Cat from thinking Kara is Supergirl. Cat wants Kara to admit she is Supergirl or she will fire her. Cat believes that she should be out saving people rather than be her assistant. Kara doesn’t want to quit her job nor admit she is Supergirl. Kara tells Cat that she needs the job and work for Cat because she helps her be a better person. Cat still won’t let up so Kara quits but not till the end of the day.
After the events of the episode are over, Supergirl visits Cat and at the same time Kara enters her office. The two shake hands and have a small conversation. This finally convinces Cat that Kara isn’t Supergirl and admits that Kara looks nothing like Supergirl.
On the roof of CatCo, we learn that it was Henshaw who transformed as Supergirl to help Kara out. Henshaw would have liked Kara working for the DEO full time but she says that she needs this job as it is her friends that keep her grounded.
Coda
Back at her desk, Kara gets an IM from Clark asking her if everything is okay. Kara assures her cousin that she is fine. Clark responds that he will be there for her and reminds her that blood bonds (something echoed between Kara and Astra and Astra and Alura).
Later, the Superfriends decide that they fill find out what Lord is really up to.
And what Lord is up to has to do with the girl he has stashed in his secret room that also has the Red Tornado’s arm. This woman has brain damage but when she wakes up, her eyes are all black. Who is this girl? Could she be the Bizarro version that is rumoured to be part of the show? We will find out in two weeks!
