The Flash goes King Kong in this episode with the return of Grodd, who kidnaps Caitlin and takes her to his bell tower.
But lets recap how we got there.
Date Cut Short
Cisco is very excited for this date with Kendra that involves dinner and a movie. Cisco and Kendra arrive at the movie theater (Vancouver filming fun fact: the movie theater is in fact the Orpheum, the home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the entrance that they used that has the box office, isn’t actually used at all by the VSO). Just as they are about to go in, Kendra touches Cisco and he starts to vibe, seeing a person with wings. Freaked out by this, Cisco cuts their visit short.
Later on, Cisco visits Kendra at Jitters with a basket of flowers and chocolate as an apology for ditching her. Cisco says he had to go because of his duties with the CCPD. Cisco wants to pick up where they left off and brought a digital movie projector to show The Princess Bride. Kendra then kisses Cisco and he vibes again and sees Kendra as Hawkgirl. After the kiss, Cisco calls Kendra a great kisser and the two continue with their date.
After the fight with Zoom left Barry unable to walk, we see him slowly getting back on his feet. Thanks to his fast healing, Barry’s broken back is almost healed. However, the fight with Zoom has shaken Barry’s confidence and is unable to tap into this speed. Barry is despondent that Zoom showed all of Central City that the Flash cannot save them from this villain. Joe and Iris can’t get through to Barry but Henry does.
Father and son have a emotional reunion. Barry tells his dad about his fears and how Central City seems him. Henry shares who people no longer believed him during the trial of his mom’s murder. What kept Henry going was Barry’s belief in him.
With Henry’s job done in lifting his son’s spirits, he leaves. Joe is a bit envious of this father-son relationship that makes him wonder what it would have been like if he had a son. Iris assures her dad that he would have been a great dad to a son like he was to her. Oh Iris, you know Joe has a son. I really wonder when are we going to get introduced to him.
Keeping Dr. Wells
Wells is ready to go back to Earth-2 to defeat Zoom but Caitlin thinks it is a bad idea, that Wells is better of staying to defeat Zoom on Earth-1. Eventually, Caitlin does manage to convince Wells to stay with the idea to close all the breaches around Central City except for the one under STAR Labs as a way to lure Zoom.
Barry has been avoiding Patty by saying he is really sick. When Patty gets conflicting stories about chicken noodle soup from Barry and Joe, she knows that Barry is lying to her. Later on after Barry has recovered, Patty wants to know why he lied. Barry lies by saying that his dad was in town and wanted to spend time with him. The reason why Barry didn’t tell Patty was because his dad was wrongly convicted of murder and some people may not look past the conviction. Patty tells Barry that he doesn’t give him self credit that people can accept his dad. Barry kind of laughs this off and the two are playful again and seem back on track.
The Return of Grodd
We see a scientist from Vaughn pharmaceuticals fall under mind control to steal a canister. When the scientist goes outside, we see Grodd emerge, fling him to his death and grabs the canister and flees.
The next day, Patty notes hairs on the scene and the crime matches a similar one at another lab. Patty tells Joe that what was stolen was a serum that treats blood diseases of the brain.
Later, Patty determines that the other lab had drugs stolen to treat vertigo. When Patty tells Joe that the hairs on the scene contained gorilla DNA that Joe realizes that Grodd as returned.
Joe warns Team Flash that Grodd has returned while at the same time Cisco says Caitlin punched him for no reason. Looking at security footage, they determine that Caitlin was mind controlled by Grodd as they see the ape follow her out of STAR Labs.
In Grodd’s new HQ (the same building that was used as Watchtower in Smallville), Caitlin learns that the drugs that Grodd stole was to help make her make others like her. Grodd took Caitlin not only because she could help but also she was the only one that was kind to her.
Cisco and Wells determine that Grodd could be in 1 of 3 locations. To distract Grodd, Wells dons the Reverse Flash costume (pissing Barry off at first). They want to think that Earth-2 Wells is the Wells that created him so they can get Caitlin.
The first two locations are a bust but the third times the charm. Wells, at first, does a convincing job but when he asks nicely to free Caitlin that is when Grodd knows something is up and throws Wells away.
Caitlin is about the mind controlled again but Cisco comes in to give her anti-mind control ear plugs. With Cisco and Caitlin safe, Wells takes three syringes of the drug and injects into Grodd so everyone can escape.
Back at STAR Labs, Team Flash decide to send Grodd through one of the breaches into Earth-2. Wells knows which one they should use and will use the speed canon to help. Caitlin gets Grodd to come out of his hiding space while the Flash whisks here away and gets Grodd to chase him underneath a bridge to where the breach is at. Barry gets a flashback of his fight with Zoom that allows Grodd to get the upper hand. Caitlin arrives and talks Grodd to enter the circle that will suck him into the breach. As the breach starts to take Grodd, the ape fights it and the Flash uses his speed to punch him into the breach. In the coda, we see Grodd arrive in Africa where it looks like the ape has found creatures like him.
We are off next week but on December 1 we get The Flash/Arrow cross-over event and it looks absolutely epic.
