Arrow Season 4 “Green Arrow” Recap

It’s season 4 and everything is being reset as Starling City is now Star City, Team Arrow is doing fine without Oliver and Olicity is enjoying domestic bliss.

Well at least one part is enjoying domesticity. We open the episode with Oliver running through the woods to his house in the burbs where Felicity is attempting to cook breakfast but alas “Felicity Smoak, you have failed this omelet”. Apparently, in their 5 months away from Team Arrow, Oliver has developed a love of cooking however breakfast is quickly for forgotten for some morning loving. In the afterglow, we see that Oliver removed the dragon tattoo that he had because he no longer needed.

Their morning bliss is cut short with Felicity needing to be on a conference call as the CEO of Palmer Technologies and Oliver needing to buy ingredients for brunch with the neighbours. Oliver is grateful that he is running errands as opposed to running after bad guys or them chasing him.

Meanwhile, Team Arrow is chasing after a group of bad guys known as Ghosts who have stolen something from Kord Industries. Thea aka Speedy (she wants to be known as Red Arrow) is having such a good time chasing the bad guys. At first, Team Arrow has managed to stop them but backup arrives and they get away with the goods.

The next day, we learn that no one wants to be mayor of Star City and that it is being led by a committee comprised of the DA, the comptroller, the head of emergency services and Lance. Even with the new name, Star City is struggling despite the new train connecting Star City with Central City. We learn that no one wants to come to Star City but leave it.

A man, who know is Damien Darhk, crashes the meeting to state he is the man that is in charge of the Ghosts and pretty much threatens them and the city.

Soon, the DA is poisoned, the comptroller is killed by a sniper and the head of emergency services is stabbed to death. Team Arrow isn’t there in time to save those three but the attempt to kill Lance only results in a flesh wound in the arm.

Back in suburbia, brunch with the neighbours is all about them enjoying the eggs that Oliver cooked and also them helping Olicity get their future kids on a list for school. Olicity is not comfortable with this conversation and when Felicity goes to get the champagne to make mimosas, we learn that Oliver has his mom’s engagement ring with the plan to propose.

Later that night, as Oliver places the engagement ring in souffles he made, Thea and Laurel interrupt the proposal seeking Oliver’s help in stopping the new threat. Thea and Laurel update Oliver and Felicity on what is happening that ends with all of them visiting the new lair.

Of course, Diggle isn’t happy to see Oliver and leaves to go home to Lyla and Sara. At home, Lyla has forgiven Oliver for what he has done because he understands why he had to and encourages Diggle to do that same. Diggle is still not cool to that thought.

Flashback

Oliver is in Coast City being Arrow-like in stopping criminals but isn’t doing such a hot job at it. Waller comes across him and takes him to a bar for drinks. Waller tells Oliver she knows why he doesn’t want to go home and that is he doesn’t want his family to see the monster he has become. Soon, Oliver realizes that his drink was drugged and when he wakes up he is in a carrier plane ready to be thrown off back to Lian Yu. Oliver is to complete some sort of mission for Waller because he knows the island. As soon as Oliver lands, he is immediately greeted by an armed soldier.

Back at the new Arrow Cave, Felicity learns that the weapons stolen from Kord Industries are cluster bombs and she has managed to find out where it was last located, some abandoned truck depot.

So Team Arrow with Oliver, who doesn’t suit up (despite Cisco tricking out his suit), go to the depot to find the weapons.

At the depot, they see Darhk being pissed off at one of his men for letting Team Arrow almost foiling their plan. Darhk then uses his powers to suck the life out of his henchman. Having seen enough, Team Arrow jump into action to try and take the men out. Thea is a bit too aggressive with one of the men that Oliver has to stop her. The SCPD comes on the scene and Team Arrow and Oliver flee but not before Lance sees Oliver (in a ski mask) and also not before Oliver learns the Ghosts target is the train station. (Aside: I am disappointed in the lack of the Canary cry in this episode. End aside).

Back at the Arrow Cave, Oliver has encountered something like this in the past. Oliver also learns that Felicity has been secretly helping Team Arrow throughout their travels and life of domestic bliss. Oliver isn’t mad that Felicity is helping the team but that she doesn’t want to live a normal life. Felicity says that she loves Oliver and their lives but she was bored by the brunches and life in suburbia. Felicity wants to save the city as it gives her life some purpose.

Team Arrow goes to the train station where Oliver worries about Thea and also tries to make peace with Diggle. However, Thea says she is fine and Diggle isn’t very receptive. Lance comes to the station and tells Oliver that ever since he has come back from the island, he has only brought darkness to Star City.

The train station ends up being a bust and Oliver shares with Felicity what Lance told him and he worries that it’s true. Later on, Felicity determines that the target wasn’t the train station but it is actually the train.

Felicity unveils Oliver’s new suit and off goes Team Arrow to save Star City. Speedy, Black Canary and Lance help evacuate the train station while Oliver and Diggle go to try and stop the train.

Oliver enters one of the cars that contain the bombs and meets Darhk, who introduces himself while stopping Oliver’s arrows just before it hits him. Darhk uses his power to suck the life out of Oliver until Diggle manages to stop Dhark who quickly disappears.

Back at the Arrow Cave, Team Arrow is happy at their success and Oliver shares their new enemy is Damien Darhk. Oliver says that Ra’s told him about some HIVE collective or something like that. Oliver thinks that this might mean something to him as Diggle remembers what Deadshot told him about HIVE hiring him to kill his brother. However, Diggle says that it doesn’t mean anything to him and leaves to go tuck Sara in still not ready to forgive Oliver.

Later, Oliver gives a TV broadcast in his superhero costume to announce his new code name. Oliver’s speech is all about how the Arrow inspired him to help save Star City so his name will be the Green Arrow. The Green Arrow hopes to inspire people and be their beacon of hope

As the episode ends, we learn that Lance is working with Darhk, who wants to know the identity of the Green Arrow. Lance seems to have to do his bidding, even though he doesn’t want to. I am curious to know what does Darhk have on Lance that makes him have to work for him.

With Oliver now the Green Arrow, he and Felicity move into Thea’s loft. No worries though about leaving Thea homeless, she has been living with Laurel as she can no longer live in the loft considering Ra’s stabbed here there. Also, that engagement ring? Looks like we’ve hit the pause button on that.

We flash forward to six months later and Oliver is looking over a fresh grave site wearing a dark suit. Barry apologies for missing the service because of Zoom and Oliver vows to Barry that he will kill presumably Darhk. Oliver kneels down on the grave stone in sadness but we don’t know who it is. I am really hoping it isn’t Felicity or anyone on Team Arrow. But who could it be to make Oliver so sad. Any guesses? Sound off in the comments.
