Arrow Season 4 “Legends of Yesterday” Recap

It is the second part of Heroes Joins Forces with the action that started on The Flash moves over to Arrow and while the majority of hour one took place in Star City, hour two takes place in Central City. And this cross-over does feel like a two hour movie rather than an episode of The Flash or Arrow.

There is not island flashback in this episode but instead we get a flashback to Kendra and Carter’s time in Ancient Egypt. Khufu has come back from a mission delivering offerings to Horace in front of Shayera’s father. Shayera isn’t too impressed with Khufu’s offering and the two have a war of words. Their verbal sparring match is interrupted by Vandal Savage who carries the staff of Horace warning the group of the arrival of sky rocks. Later when Khufu and Shayera are alone, their war of words were an act as the two passionately kiss and make off for some alone time. Savage sees all of this.

Back to present day, Team Flarrow now with Caitlin and Laurel have moved Carter and Kendra to a farmhouse for their protection while they figure out their next move. This involves Cisco making some sort of gauntlet that lets the team touch the staff of Horace, Thea, Diggle and Laurel going off to find what they can on Savage, and Carter takes Kendra to the fields to show her the Hawkgirl outfit. Meanwhile Oliver takes off to do something else.

That something else is to see Samantha, the young woman he had a fling 10 years ago. Oliver confronts Samantha about her son William, thinking that it is his son. Samantha says that William isn’t. However, Oliver grabs a strand of Williams hair off his baseball cap. Oliver gets Barry to do a DNA test and it confirms that William is his son. Oliver goes back to Samantha’s and confronts her about this news/ Samantha’s tells Oliver how his mom paid her a million dollars to say she lost the baby. Oliver doesn’t believe her at first but does once Samantha shows her the cheque she didn’t cash. Oliver wants to get to know his son but Samantha doesn’t want him any where near his orbit as his life is way to complicated for her taste. Samantha relents a bit but gives Oliver tons of conditions like he can’t tell anyone especially his girlfriend. Of course, Felicity knows something is up as she saw the DNA test that Barry did. Felicity doesn’t care that Oliver has a son but that he lied to her about it and probably wasn’t going to tell her. What hurts Felicity the most is that Oliver doesn’t trust her and probably never will and walks away, probably spelling the end of Olicity.

In other action that has nothing to do with Oliver’s baby mama, Malcolm calls Oliver to say he has arranged a meeting with the two of them and Barry with Savage. As the Flash speeds his way to the meeting, Barry sees a double of himself but has no time to think what that means as he arrives at the meeting. To summarize the meeting: Savage wants Carter and Kendra brought to a warehouse or he will kill everyone in Star City and Central City.

Back at the farmhouse, Kendra is still having a hard time wrapping herself over everything and takes off out back. Cisco wants to go and talk to her but is stopped by Carter who talks to her. Kendra isn’t happy that Team Flarrow are sacrificing their lives for the two of them. Carter thinks it is noble and they can help if only Kendra can truly emerge. Carter gets Kendra to fight him and when she finally taps into her rage does her wings emerge.

Barry tells Cisco that he ghosted and he knows that means he will time travel soon. Cisco and Barry knows this will be bad to mess with time but thinks that now they know that they can stop this from happening.

Thea, Laurel and Diggle find a beta max tape of a professor from 1975 discussing his dealings with Savage and also describes the sky rocks.

Team Flarrow form a plan that involves pretending that Kendra has her powers. When Diggle, Thea and Laurel wonder how they can help, Oliver says it will just be him and Barry suiting up.

At the warehouse, Savage arrives and calls Kendra his love, which she replies that he will never be. When Savage grabs one of his knives to kill Kendra, Oliver stops him and the Flash speeds around to grab the staff. However, Kendra can’t tap into her powers and Carter is stabbed to death and soon after Kendra too. Barry, with the gauntlets on, tries to use the staff of Horace on Savage but it isn’t working. Oliver soon joins Barry in holding the staff. Knowing that Barry can outrun things, Oliver says “Run, Barry, Run” as he handles the staff. Barry takes off running as we see the power of the staff incinerate Oliver. As the power of the staff makes it way through Central City, we see Laurel, Thea, Diggle, Caitlin and Felicity all burn up and die. Meanwhile, Barry has run so fast that he has gone back in time just before his meeting with Savage.

We get the tail end of the meeting with Savage when Barry tells Oliver that he has traveled back in time and knows their plan won’t work. Oliver believes him especially when Barry knows about the DNA test that he wants him to run. Barry tells Oliver that it will tell him that he is a father and that he should tell Felicity. His fight with Felicity in the previous time line distracted Oliver from their mission, which is one of the reasons why it failed.

Back at the farmhouse, Cisco interrupts Carter’s talk with Kendra and uses a different approach to get her to emerge. Cisco says that it shouldn’t be rage but her heart and her kindness that will help her remember. Cisco gets her to close her eyes and Kendra remembers how Savage killed her and Carter the first time.

Kendra then tells Team Flarrow that the way to defeat Savage involves the meteor that showered on them at the time of their first death. Felicity finds out a meteor from that time is at Keystone City, which Barry speeds to and back. Cisco is able to take the meteorite and place it in the gauntlet.

Instead of just Barry and Oliver meeting Savage with Kendra and Carter, the rest of Team Arrow suit up.

At the warehouse, it all plays out like before but this time, Kendra’s wings emerge and Team Arrow arrive to join the fight with the Black Canary using her Canary cry and arrows are flying. This time though, the gauntlets work as Barry and Oliver use the staff on Savage where he turn to dust.

After all is over, it really is unknown if Savage has truly been defeated. Cisco and Kendra say good bye as she will be leaving with Carter to help people. Cisco doesn’t quite understand why Kendra is going with Carter as it seems like she doesn’t like him. Kendra explains that their relationship is a complicated one that probably will get explored in Legends of Tomorrow. Before parting, Cisco gives Kendra a homing beacon that she can use if ever she needs his help.

Before Barry leaves, he advises Oliver to be a part of his son’s life and to tell Felicity. The two hug it out and we see that Oliver listened to Barry partly. Oliver goes back to Samantha and agrees to her terms and gets to enjoy some time with his son.

When Olicity return to their home in Star City, Felicity wants to be there for Oliver and tries to get him to open up. Oliver says that nothing is bothering him and is just glad they are home.

The episode ends back in the warehouse with Malcolm gathering the ashes of Savage and placing it in some kind of canister muttering what sounds like a spell and says that he owes him one. So did Malcolm know Savage before despite telling Team Flarrow the opposite? Will all of this play out in Legends of Tomorrow?

Next week is the mid-season finale and perhaps we will find out who is in the grave.
