Supergirl Season 3 “Girl of Steel” Recap

We are back after what feels like forever. After this long hiatus, while Supergirl is riding high after saving the world from the Daxamite invasion, Kara isn’t doing so hot. Kara is struggling with losing Mon-el and has decided to shut off her humanity. This is very similar to how at the beginning of season 9 of Smallville Clark shut off his humanity after losing Lois.

Speaking of Lois, guess who has joined the cast of Supergirl? Well it is Smallville’s Lois Lane herself, Erica Durance, who has assumed the role of Alura from the amazing but very busy Laura Benanti.
And we see Alura in the opening moments of the episode. Kara is having a dream of being in an open field and reuniting with Mon-el and sharing a tender moment with him. Kara also shares a silent reunion with her mother but is brought back to reality to stop an armoured truck robbery. Maggie and Alex are also in pursuit and when it is all over notes how business-like Kara has become.
Back at the DEO, Winn and J’onn also notices the same thing especially after she turns down free appetizer tasting for Maggie and Alex’s wedding (Maggie obviously said yes).
Meawhile, Lena is dealing with Morgan Edge (Adrian Pasdar), a real estate developer who wants to revitalize National City’s Waterfront but more for the benefit of the wealthy. Edge even guilt trips Lena for her part in the Daxamite invasion as the city wouldn’t need revitalization if they hadn’t come.
At CatCo, we learn that Cat is now press secretary to President Marsdin and James is back in charge. James asks about the status of people’s stories including Kara’s one-on-one with Supergirl. Kara says that she hasn’t had an opportunity to talk to her yet but promises to get the story in time for the dedication ceremony.
Their attention is called away by news that Edge is going to buy CatCo. Kara goes to Lena to see what she can find out from the other shareholders to see what he is up to. Lena then tries to get Kara to hang out with her as she notices she has been blowing her off. Kara promises to do something soon with her be we know that is an empty promise.
At the alien bar, everyone wonders how much space they need to give Kara but J’onn thinks they need to give as much space she needs. Maggie notices Alex being a distant and is afraid that she regrets the engagement but Alex is worried about Kara and misses her sister.
Everyone gets an alert that identifies the robbery culprit as Robert Dubois and lets Supergirl know that he is targeting a military supplier.
Once there, Supergirl learn the building is lead lined and inside gets fired about by Bloodsport. Supergirl exposes a wall and on the other side is a Daxamite warship. Bloodsport gets away when Supergirl tends to one of the wounded. Supergirl determines he will be okay and goes off when James sets off his Supergirl alarm.
However, once Supergirl arrives, James called her because Kara missed her deadline. Kara is pissed that James used the alarm for that purpose. James tries to get her to see the value of being both Supergirl and Kara but it ends with Kara quitting her job as a reporter at CatCo to become Supergirl full-time.
At the DEO, J’onn is mad that General Lane did not disclose the military had a Daxamite ship. Winn lets J’onn and Alex know that Bloodsport stole a high pressure regulator and a cloaking device from the Daxamite ship.
When Alex learns that Kara quit CatCo, she marches over to her apartment and tries to get her out of funk. But Kara refuses to listen and says that being Kara sucks. Alex wants to help Kara get over Mon-el but this makes things worse. Kara says Alex would have made the same decision as her if it involved Maggie and she would always chose saving the world. Kara goes back to all business and Alex lets her know what Bloodsport stole. Before leaving, Alex tells Kara that it is Kara Davners that has saved her plenty of times and not Supergirl.
That sentiment is echoed by J’onn who lets Kara know that it was her that saved him from wallowing in his grief. Kara doesn’t know if she can save the world with her heart broken but J’onn doesn’t believe that to be the case. Kara then mentions that she has been dreaming about Mon-el and her mom for the past couple of months. The two are having this conversation while keeping an eye for Bloodsport at the Girl of Steel statue unveiling.

Also keeping an eye out is Alex and Maggie. Maggie gets Alex to confess how she doesn’t want a big wedding as her dad can’t be there to walk her down the aisle. Maggie and Alex come to an understanding to always be honest with each other.
At this dedication we also meet Sam (Odette Anabale) and her daughter Ruby (Emma Tremblay) who ran into Alex in order to be up front for the ceremony.
The ceremony begins and Lena unveils the statue and just as Supergirl is about to make her way down, Bloodsport makes his move and the ground shakes. J’onn, Supergirl, Winn, Maggie and Alex are trying to determine where the shot came from but nothing. Supergirl realizes that it didn’t come from above but from a cloaked submarine in the water.

Meanwhile, Supergirl has plunged the depths of the water and has found the sub. Bloodsport and crew fires another missile that she can’t stop. The ground cracks open and Ruby and Sam are separated as the debris continues to fall, a piece os scaffolding falls on Ruby. Sam uses her all of might to move the scaffolding off of Ruby and sees that she has crushed the metal as she cradles her daughter in her arms.
Supergirl is knocked out and everyone is concerned for her. It is only her hallucination of Mon-el telling her to wake up that she stops another missile from being fired. Supergirl then flies up the submarine and Bloodsport is contained.
The next day, at L Corp., Lena tells Kara that she has bought CatCo to stop Edge from doing so. Lena needs Kara to be there to help her run CatCo and begs her to unquit. Edge arrives and tells Lena that he knows has his attention. Kara leaves so they can talk but comes back as Supergirl to grab Edge to tell him that she know he was behind the attack as he is the only one that has something to gain from it. But Supergirl has no proof but Edge does have her attention. We then learn that Edge accidentally uncovered Sam/Reign’s spaceship with his machinations, which is why we see Sam power up.
At the DEO, it looks like Alex and Maggie are going to have a big wedding. Alex nervously asks J’onn to walk her down the aisle and he happily accepts the honour. The two then go down to the alien bar to celebrate.
Later at Kara’s apartment, she is cleaning out her stuff and comes across photos of her and Mon-el. Kara whispers wake up and this gets her to come back to humanity. Kara texts Lena to says she will see her tomorrow boss. Then Kara goes to the alien bar for drinks with her friends and family, who welcome her back with open arms.
We then go back to the opening scene and what we think is Kara’s mother looking all dream-like but when she turns around, she screams with a demonic face. It turns out to be a dream but it is Sam dreaming.
I am hoping that we actually get to hear Erica Durance speak as her appearance today was more of a silent cameo than anything significant but curious to know how Sam’s dream of her plays into her story.
Thank you, Vanessa!!!
I am really in this for Erica, and although she did not speak, I am happy to see that her story may be tied to more than just Kara.
I do hope this means we see more of Erica/Alura, and more than just a hologram.
