Supergirl Season 2 “Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk” Recap

We pick up immediately after the next episode with Mxyzptlk (Peter Gadiot) or Mxy swooping in like a Patronus to woo Kara. Mon-el is not happy at the imp who interrupted his almost kiss with Kara. Mxy doesn’t see Mon-el as much competition so snaps his fingers so he goes to the DEO in just his underwear.
Back at Kara’s, Mxy has set the scene for his proposal: candles, a string quartet, a Vera Wang wedding dreess and him singing my favourite song from Aladdin “A Whole New World”. Kara is having none of this and turns down Mxy’s proposal. We do learn some limitations of Mxy’s powers and that he can’t make Kara say yes or fall in love with him, stop her from killing herself and I believe either make her drink orange juice or stop her. Mxy also tells Kara that if she refuses him, he will create havoc on National CIty until she agrees to marry him.
At the DEO it seems that J’onn and Mon-el have both dealt with fifth dimension imps on Mars and Daxamite respectively. Mon-el tells Kara that on Daxamite they just kill imps but she and J’onn want to handle Mxy in a more peaceful manner. Winn is tasked to finding that way.

The next day, Supergirl stops a jewelry store robbery but Mxy shows up and ends up turning the robber’s guns on themselves and pulls the trigger. Supergirl ends up having to save them but still knocks them out to place them under arrest.
Mon-el and Kara argue how to best take care of Mxy. Mon-el still wants to resort to violence and Kara wants him to let her handle things.
Later that night, Kara sees that Parasite (a rogue that was thought vanquished) appear in the streets of National City. Supergirl battles Parasite and Mon-el joins in the fights. However, Parasite gets defeated when Mxy flies in in a modified Superman costume so save the day. Mon-el confronts Mxy and reveals the way to send him back is by getting Mxy to say his name backwards. Kara is angry at Mon-el for withholding that information while also mad at Mxy for deliberately in dangering the people of National City. Mxy tells Kara that the solution to stopping him is to say “I Do”. By the way, in the foreground of the scene when Mxy arrives, you see Vancouver’s Marine Building that for years played the Daily Planet on Smallville
Back at the DEO, Kara and Mon-el have a huge argument. Kara accuses Mon-el at being jealous (which he denies). Kara also tells Mon-el that they are too different and that their relationship or lack there of isn’t going to work out.
Crest-fallen, Mon-el learns of a potential weapon from Winn that could defeat Mxy.
Mon-el confronts Mxy to a deal to the death. So Mxy whisks them to Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre and puts them in Hamilton-esque costumes (even referencing the hit musical) for their duel. Mon-el uses the weapon on Mxy that neuters his powers. But Mon-el gets a bit too cocky and Mxy gets the upper hand and strings him up and ready to put a bullet in him. Kara arrives (after realizing Mon-el took the weapon to stop Mxy) and agrees to marry Mxy. The only condition Kara has is she wants to be married at the Fortress of Solitude at noon the next day.
The next day at Kara’s apartment, Mon-el admits that he was jealous and begs Kara not to marry Mxy. Kara tells Mon-el she is going through with it. While she may not love Mxy, Kara realizes that his powers can help her keep the peace and they would make a great team. Mon-el thought that it would be them working as a team to keep the peace.
At the Fortress of Solitude, Mxy has arrived at the appointed time in a tux and ready to get married. Kara arrives in her Supergirl costume and drinks a glass of orange juice. Kara tells Mxy that she isn’t going to marry him and spouts all the reasons why. Mxy is pissed and brings to life the giant ice sculpture of Jor-el. Kara battles is and defeats it. Kara then seals the Fortress and sets the self-destruct button. Kara is willing to die so she doesn’t have to marry Mxy. Mxy also not wanting to die begs Kara for the code to turn of the self-destruct. As the seconds tick down, Kara gives Mxy the sequence to shut it off. It turns out that the code is Mxy’s name spelt backwards and writing down something is just as good as saying it. So there goes Mxy back to the fifth dimension but something tells me he will be a recurring nuisance for Supergirl in seasons to come.
The next day, Mon-el visits Kara at her apartment. The two clear the air. Mon-el apologizes to say that Kara was right and to say that he has never felt this way before when it comes to Kara and that his feelings for are his weakness. Mon-el believes the two can’t be together but Kara admits that she lied about them not working out to protect him from Mxy. The whole scene was pretty hot as the two finally are on the same page romantically and kiss each other passionately.
I seriously am shipping Mon-el and Kara so hard. I haven’t shipped a couple this much since Smallville’s Lois and Clark. So I am so very happy that the two are now a couple that I really hope are the end game couple of the show because Chris Wood and Melissa Benoist have some serious chemistry that I personally haven’t seen since Erica Durance and Tom Welling.
Elsewhere, it is Valentine’s Day in National City:
- J’onn sends a Valentine’s all to Mars to M’gann (Awww!).
- Winn meets Lyra (Tamzin Merchant) from Star Haven at the alien bar. The two hit off and go out on Valentine’s Day. The next night, Lyra is surprised to hear from Winn thinking that what they shared the night before was a one-time thing. Winn assures Lyra that is not the case and that he is starting to fall for her and it is not her being an alien that scares him but falling for anyone since he has had his heart broken a few times in the past.

- Alex was looking forward to celebrating her first Valentine’s Day with Maggie but gets discouraged when she hears that her lady love hates the day. Kara encourages Alex to make the day special for just the two of them. When Alex does just that, Maggie gets upset at her at no respecting her anti-Valentine’s Day sentiment. Alex manages to get Maggie to share why she hates the holiday so much. It seems when Maggie was 14, she gave a Valentine’s card to a girl she liked who then gave it to her parents who then outed Maggie to her own parents. The result is her father kicked her forcing her to live with an aunt. Later, Kara tells Maggie how much her sister was looking forward to spending her first Valentine’s Day with her. That night, Maggie plans a romantic evening for Alex that includes an impromptu prom.
Next week we see the return of Dean Cain and I really do hope that he comes back for the episodes that feature Teri Hatcher.
