I really wanted to love The Bourne Legacy because I loved the previous three Bourne movies. But I had some trepidation about the latest film because this Bourne movie would not feature Matt Damon as Jason Bourne but instead focuses in on Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), who was part of the Outcome program that is somehow attached to Treadstone and Blackbriar which were programs that were the crux of the previous Bourne films.

However, Tony Gilroy, who wrote the previous Bourne films and is directing his first Bourne film, does such a poor job at explaining everything.

Throughout its 135 minute running time, I had no clue what the movie was about and felt it was weighed down too much by some scientific/medical element that led Aaron to seek out Rachel Weisz’s scientist Marta Shearing.

To let the audience know that this is a continuation of the Bourne franchise we get appearances by David Straithairn’s Noah Vosson, Joan Allen’s Pam Landy and whatever characters that Scott Glenn and Albert Finney played.

If you want to know what the Bourne Legacy is about, go to the film’s Wikipedia entry because honestly I felt that I was confused the whole time that I can’t explain the movie to you guys.

The main problem is that the movie moved along at a very slow pace. We started with Aaron in Alaska doing some sort of training mission that had no point really then we switch to Rachel Weisz’s character at some lab and then we meet Edward Norton’s character, Eric Byer (but I never knew his name because no one ever uttered his name on screen) where we get some flashbacks to before Aaron was part of the program. As far as I can tell, Outcome was experimenting on people to enhance their strength and intelligence. If someone out there who reads my blog, understands the Bourne Legacy, please feel free to let me know in the comments.

All of this story telling and all of the action sequences really lead to nowhere. Speaking of the action sequences, there was no wow Bourne action moment like we had in The Bourne Supremacy when Jason beat a guy with a magazine or in The Bourne Ultimatum when he beat a guy with a towel. Also, what is with all the Bourne films having some super assassin after our hero.

At least Rachel Weisz had a meaty part in this unlike Julia Stiles in the previous three films.

And I think Jeremy Renner is a bit over-hyped and doesn’t ably fill in Matt Damon’s shoes.

I’ve heard rumblings that there might be a fifth Bourne movie but this time with Matt Damon and Jeremy Renner joining forces but the way the movie ends doesn’t lead you to believe that.

And that ending was such a clunker because the whole movie was so weak that I had no idea the movie was ending because there was so many questions that was left unanswered. The only way I knew the movie was over was when that famous Moby song started playing.

Overall, The Bourne Legacy doesn’t pay justice to the previous Bourne films and actually wished it was never made because the movie really had no point.
