NOTE: Started watching season two on December 31, 2011.

There was one thing that I wished for when Clark and Lois (Tom Welling and Erica Durance) got together and that was Clark’s heat vision activating because he was turned on by Lois. But by that point in the series, Clark had already gotten his heat vision under control. But getting turned on was how Clark discovered this power during season two.

I also wished that Clark gave Kyla’s bracelet from Skinwalker to Lois. In that episode, her grandfather clearly states that it’s meant for his true love. Clark had this bracelet in his possession for almost two whole seasons before Lois showed up and never once, as far as I’ve heard, gave it to Lana even during the eight seasons she was on the show. To me that is telling that during this time, he thought that Lana was the love of his life so why wouldn’t he just give it to her. To me, I took it as a sign that he knew deep down that Lana wasn’t his true love. But I think the powers that be really failed in season 10 in not having Clark give Lois that bracelet because Lois is clearly the love of his life.

Anyways, as I continue on my Smallville journey, I found the season premiere to be a little bit heartbreaking on the Chloe-Clark front. As much as I hate seeing Clark being romantic or having romantic feelings for anyone other than Lois, I still felt bad for Chloe because she herself had put her and Clark in the friendship category even though Clark briefly thought about pursuing something romantic with Chloe in season one. It does make me wonder though and would love to see how Clark and Lois went from friendship to falling in love even when Clark had his Lana blinders on.

The season premiere also firmly establishes that Clark’s secret is becoming the main stumbling block to Clark and Lana coming together. I thought it was hilarious that Lana was the one to say that a relationship built on secrets and lies is doomed to fail. In the episode Nocturne, Lana and Clark had a conversation about being able to accept a person when they are willingly able to share their whole self with someone else and Clark saying that what if the risk were too great. This mirrors the conversation that Clark has with Lois in season 10’s Isis. Lana said that if he didn’t take the risk Clark would miss out on something great. Clark didn’t take that risk but in Isis, Clark did and was rewarded by a pretty nice kiss from Lois.

Season two continued a bit of the freak of the week mentality of season one although this time the freak of the week wasn’t necessarily bad because of the meteor rocks.

But I want to talk a bit about Chloe (Allison Mack). Since this is season two and if I was watching this show back then without the knowledge that they would add Lois Lane I actually would be annoyed with Smallville and Chloe. I mean the way her character is, an aspiring journalist wanting to write for the Daily Planet screams Lois Lane and I thought this was a way for Smallville to have Lois but not have her and that somehow Chloe would change her name to Lois Lane but that wouldn’t make any sense at all. But I have to say that I am getting tired of the triangle between Lana, Clark and Chloe. I mean if you think about it the powers that be want fans to either root for Clark to be with Lana or to be with Chloe kind of like in Felicity where we either want her with Ben or Noel. Usually when a show ends, the main dude ends up with one of the leading ladies that the show established from the beginning. So that is why I don’t see why they had to introduce Chloe as a potential love interest for Clark. I understand Lana because in the comics she was his childhood love but it is Lois Lane that it his soul mate so you know in the end that Chloe gets the shaft.

Season two, as mentioned, Clark discovers a new power and that is heat vision. I did like the scene where Clark learned to control his heat vision by lighting the red and blue candles that are seen in season 10’s Scion when Clark teaches Connor (Lucas Grabeel) to control his heat vision, which was activated when he saw Lois.

We are also introduced to a new meteor rock: red kryptonite which takes away Clark’s inhibitions allowing him to say and do whatever he wants. I have to say when Clark is under red K for the first time it reminds me of Clark Luthor, I guess that is what Tom Welling channeled that performance during season 10. There were some parallels in Red to Luthor where you had Clark bringing Lana flowers to apologize for being a jackass and Clark bringing Lois flowers to apologize for his doppleganger from a parallel Earth for trying to kill her. Anyways, I have to say I prefer when Clark was on red K in season six’s Crimson where he gets infected and makes out with Lois. His black outfit in Red foreshadows his Blur outfit in season 9.

Season two also introduces elements that would resonate in later seasons. This is especially true in Fever where we see Helen Bryce take a sample of Clark’s blood which Lex would later steal to create Connor. Also, in the episode Precipice foreshadows what Lana’s personality becomes in future seasons. She mentions in this particular episode how she wants to be able to defend herself without Clark having to rescue her always. This to me foreshadows why she steals the Prometheus suit in season eight so she could have powers and be Clark’s equal as she feels that is the only way she can be with him. In Precipice she mentions how Lex brings out a side of her she didn’t know she had. I think this foreshadows when they get married that it turns on the dark side of her personality.

In Calling Lana wonders if she could be with Clark because he has all these secrets that he keeps from her. After watching this episode, it finally makes it clear to me that Lana totally isn’t suited to Clark at all and this is only season two. Now I haven’t seen all of season 9 but it really seems that Lois doesn’t mind that Clark has secrets and even after Lois does find out about Clark’s secret at the end of season 9, she was willing to still be with him even though if he never shares that secret with him because she loves him.

More foreshadowing occurs in the really awful episode Accelerate. Near the end Lana talks to Clark in his loft, she worries one day, he’ll see she’s not the perfect picture he created of her and that she’ll disappoint him. This comes true in Season Seven’s Wrath. Also, Lana mentions in Accelerate that maybe she should start believing in Clark because he believes in her. I am thinking, if you really love this man then you should have always believed him. As Clark said in his wedding vows to Lois “You’ve always believed in me and I believe in you. And when you believe in someone it’s not for now or for a minute but forever.” Also, I think this is why Clark and Lois were meant to be. Clark did create this perfect picture of Lana in his head (Clark mentions in Accelerate that is how he sees Lana). Because he has those coloured glasses on he doesn’t know the real her Whereas with Lois, he couldn’t stand her at first but then once het gets to really know her, he sees that she is very much like him and that is why they fall in love.

In the episode Calling we get Clark and Lana finally getting together and it is vomit inducing. It really looks like Clark wants to suck Lana’s face off and the same happens in the next episode Exodus.

And I can’t believe that Lana broke-up with Whitney via videotape. That must be her MO as she broke-up with Clark via DVD in season 7 but at least Clark had Lois there to comfort him.

I see why Clark is reluctant to tell people his secret especially the way Pete reacted when he was told. Clark is afraid that people wouldn’t accept him and see him as a freak or not forgive him for all the lies he told. It is interesting to note that Pete is the only character he told his secret to that didn’t know of it before hand and was waiting for Clark to fess up like Chloe, Lana, Lex and Lois. But Lois is the only one he willingly told not because he was forced to. It was also interesting that Martha says to Clark that the burden of his secret is something that he would have to bare alone once she and Jonathan were gone. But again not true, Lois would be the one by his side 8 years later helping bare his burden of being a hero.  In fact, Clark, in season two, is constantly afraid of being alone. Anyways, having Pete know gives that character a purpose on the show. His reluctance to tell his secret is further hammered home in Rush where Pete shouts his secret around and knows how to control Clark through his weakness to kryptonite.

Also enough of the teen angst but since he is high school for a couple more season, I will have to suffer through that. I mean Clark’s and Lana’s confession of love, which should be romantic, was so angst filled. When Clark told Lois that he loved her, it was very romantic.

I am sorry if I keep on mentioning Lois but I miss her and the dynamic and feel she added to the show. And I can’t say that I won’t mention her again when I do the season three review. It is just infuriates me watching all these struggles that Clark goes through and knowing how Lois is the one that helps him by being there for him and believing in him but I know that is seasons away.

Favourite episode of season two: Lineage (it further solidifies how Clark keeps blaming himself for all the bad stuff that has happened in Smallville), Red (Clark on red K is pretty sexy), Skinwalker because it sort of mentions Lois without mentioning her, Insurgence because it starts moving us along towards figuring out how Clark is and Martha finding out how duplicitous Lionel Luthor is. Also Insurgence is the first episode we get to see Vancouver’s Marine Building play the part of The Daily Planet. But Rosetta has to be the best episode of season two. It not only advances the story into the stratosphere by letting Clark know that he is Kal-El from Krypton but it also features movie Superman Christopher Reeve and also features the John Williams Superman score. A great episode all around. Exodus is also a great season finale. We get to meet Jor-el fully in this episode and how he wants Clark to embrace his destiny, which he believes is to rule Earth. Also we see events that would guilt Clark for a long time such as causing the miscarriage of his mother’s baby.

I just want to say here that Camille Mitchell was a great addition as the new sheriff. She is an absolute hoot in her introductory episode. Side note: Years ago, in fact in 1992, I saw Camille play Beatrice in a Vancouver Playhouse production of Much Ado About Nothing. It was my first time seeing that play and because of that production I fell in love with that play.

Worse episodes: Redux, Dichotic (Jonathan Taylor Thomas was pretty bad in this episode), Visage because it was way over the top, Rush because I really hate seeing Clark kiss anyone that is not Lois but I know again that he doesn’t kiss Lois until Hydro but willingly and knowingly until Crossfire.

So after two seasons under my belt I have to say that I am enjoying watching all of the Smallville’s. I get to understand Clark better and watching him be so unsure is definitely a stark contrast to who he is in season 10. But seeing these episodes does not change my mind about Lana. I hate her character. I don’t like how she keeps on pressuring Clark to be honest with her or to share his secret with her. On a positive note, I am actually really loving the dynamic of Jonathan and Martha Kent (John Schneider and Annette O’Toole). They have great chemistry with each other and love how they are fiercely protective of Clark. Plus John Schneider is kinda of hot.

Now I have 22 episodes to go before I get to see Lois Lane. But I am telling you I am sorely tempted to just get to season 4 but really the season I want to see is season 9 where Clark and Lois actually become a couple but I realize that I really want to see how they evolve as a couple and truly dysfunctional Clark and Lana are.
