The last James L. Brooks movie I saw was The Simpson’s Movie and I thought that was a pretty good and funnily written movie. Since I love the humour of the Simpson’s, I thought I would give How Do You Know a shot.
And you know what, it was a pretty good movie and definitely had laugh out loud moments none that come to mind right now but I do remember laughing quite a bit throughout this movie.
Here is the basic premise from Wikipedia: A romantic comedy centered on a love triangle between Team USA softball player (Reese Witherspoon) who is cut from the team as she passes 30, an executive (Paul Rudd) who finds himself the target of a criminal investigation for corporate malfeasance and a partying major-league baseball pitcher (Owen Wilson) for the Washington Nationals. (Jack Nicholson) costars as Rudd’s father and boss.
Rudd really makes this movie work. There was something sort of loveable about his George that even while going through what he was going through, he still manages to find some meaning in his life again when he meets and falls for Witherspoon’s Lisa. Rudd and Witherspoon had good chemistry and they fell into an easy rapport as the movie wore on. Nicholson was his usually Jack Nicholson self and didn’t quite enjoy him here. He was always yelling and you are supposed to like him because he pretty much raised George on his own after his wife left him but I didn’t. I didn’t sense that they had a good father-son relationship.
I also didn’t really care for Owen Wilson’s character. I didn’t really see anything attractive about him. Yes he owns up and his honest about who he is to Lisa but that isn’t attractive to me.
A true hoot was Katheryn Hahn as Rudd’s assistant Annie. Every scene she is in offers genuine laughs.
It is great to see a true film that was meant for adults and not something for Tweens or 3D spectacles that seem to fill movie theatres of late.
