After an aborted first attempt to see The Infidel at VIFF 2010, I finally got to see this British comedy starring Omid Djalili where he plays a British Muslim who goes through an identity crisis when he discovers he was adopted as a child and born to a Jewish family with the name Solly Shimshillewit.

This movie plays for laughs all of the Muslim and Jewish stereotypes without being offensive. And this credit not only goes to writer David Baddiel but also Djalili who has to balance these two identities that his character, Mahmud, has to go through throughout the film.

Archie Panjabi plays his loving wife who is confused by Mahmud’s odd behaviour. She was great in this and funny too but I wanted to see more of her on screen.

The best and funniest part of the film is the friendship that forms between Mahmud and an American living in London near Mahmud’s adopted mother’s house (Richard Schiff), Lenny Goldberg. Their relationship starts off hilariously antagonistic soon turns into a side-splitting scenes of Lenny teaching Mahmud how to be Jewish a la My Fair Lady.

See for yourself from the trailer below some of the humour I am talking about and when it gets release to theatres, go and see it.
